"The Flute Players of Roscommon CD was recently launched at Feile Frank
McGann in Strokestown, Co Roscommon. This CD consists of new recordings of twelve flute players from Roscommon, recognised widely as a stronghold of flute playing. Some artists involved are internationally recognised, others known widely but previously unrecorded and others emerging professionals.
Participating artists have contributed to this project on the basis that
all future royalties will be used for the education and development of
young musicians. With the support of the Arts Council and Roscommon County Council, all profits for this project will go to the purchase of flutes and the provision of bursaries and master classes for emerging musicians.
The album is produced by John Wynne and the players are; Patsy Hanly,
Catherine McEvoy, Tommy Guihan, John Kelly, John Carlos, Brian Duke, Frank Jordan, Bernard Flaherty, Pat Finn, Patsy McNamara, John P Carty and John Wynne. The CD is available only from www.roscommonarts.com/trad or email feadogmor@roscommonarts.com"
Thanks Maureen for posting this! I didn’t know who was going to be on the CD, but I figure you can’t go wrong with 12 flute players from Roscommon. I changed my Aer Lingus tickets so I can make the second CD release in Ennis.
Hold it!! Did I understand this correctly? Colm O’Donnell has a new CD out?? How do we (ie. non border collie owners) get a copy? …or is this an exclusive CD - for border collie owners only?
Paul
There is a new CD, which should be released in Ennis shortly as part of the festivities there, and Colm is one of the players in it. I assume it’s by players of the Sligo/Mayo border. Colm, if i’m not mistaken, has a sheep farm and breeds them doggies, so that’s probably where the name came from.
He was talking about it on Clare FM two days ago. it’s not as much his Cd as a CD of young playes I think. What I heard I wouldn’t run out to the shop to get it (not that it was bad but the tracks i heard were at best hmm average).
I just recently ordered this CD. It only took 8 days to come from Ireland. (I ordered it off the www.roscommonarts.com website.) It’s great listening. All tracks are unaccompanied flute(s), with the exception of one whistle track. My favorite track is Catherine McEvoy and John Wynne playing some barndances (Bonnie Scotland and Joe Bane’s). They really “swing”! John Wynne’s solo track of jigs is fun too! I definitely recommend this CD if you like pure Irish flute, unaccompanied!
Does anybody know if John Wynne has a solo CD available in the US? I’ll have to check the usual sources.
That whistle track really caught me off guard, I thought my CD player was going haywire! Great CD, and mine came in only five days. I haven’t really heard many flute duets before, and I’m not sure if I like them or not. They sound nice, but make the tune harder to figure out. Duet on track 14 is my favorite, I think it’s The Floating Crowbar and Trim The Velvet.
