Paddy Keenan will play in Champaign, IL on November 15. This opportunity came to us very recently and we are finalizing details like what venue we will use and other things so please keep an eye on the web site for details as they become available:
I might as well add that he’s playing Chicago on 11/12 at Martyr’s Pub at 8:00, which is followed by a set from Isacc Alderson, Pat Broaders and fiddler Chris Bain of Gan Bua at 9:30.
He’ll also be giving a workshop at the Irish American Heritage Center on the North side on 11/14.
I saw Paddy in STL last Saturday. Good show. A bit more talking and less piping than I would have preferred but I do have a bias towards wanting to hear 100% piping.
And Paddy himself opened a door for me when I had both hands filled with ales…a piper and a gentleman.
Great show in Chicago last Monday. Was surprised how talented Patsy O’Brien was. While I would be fine with all-uilleann-all-the-time, having Patsy perform a few songs of his own made the evening more ejoyable for casual trad fans like my wife.
Having never seen Paddy live before, I was pretty amazed at some of the flourishes of notes he threw into various tunes. Reminded me of John Coltrane.
He talked about that at the workshop in Wednesday night, and the concept that comes to mind is free-form improvisation. I noticed a handful of times during the Monday night show he just went off; not with your standard ornamentation, but really with unexpected flourishes of notes and a lot of staccato phrasing that just came out of nowhere.
Seeing him play live for the first time made me appreciate what he can do on the pipes. I’m looking forward to seeing him next time he’s in the area.
