OT: Full Moon

Several people have commented recently, based on the craziness factor, that it must be a full moon.

If anyone really cares, the actual full moon will be somewhere about 5:50 AM (give or take maybe ten minutes) EST (5 zones west of Greenwich), January 18.

We’ve got about three feet of snow on the ground and a crystal clear sky tonight. Should be really pretty out.

Best wishes,
Jerry

It’s the Wolf Moon.

Never scanned the fuller shots :frowning:

Did Bloomfield just “moon” the board?

I apologize!

This is great!

You’ve saved me the trouble of going outside! Nature’s well and good, but you just can’t beat technology.

Best wishes,
Jerry

You NEED one of these: http://www.moonstick.com/ – I got one as a Christmas gift last year, and it is truly, bizarrelywonderful. Totally useless, but one of the best toys I have ever received. And it’s about the size of a whistle. Warning: If you get one, your SO will probably throw you out after the 3452th time you ask him/her “do you know what the moon was like when…?”

(Edited to insert another random spelling of “Bizarrely”)

I have the digital version, kind of:

This is a slightly different one, seems to have been repackaged. Originally called the “Fish in Time” and said Forester instead of Geotrail. (They’ve upped the price, too, apparently.)

It’s designed to tell you the best time for fishing but I use it for tides and lunar cycles.

Among other things, it:
Displays moon age, moon phase, time on each hour angle (0h, 6h, 12h and 18h) on the current day or designated days until December 31st, 2039

Displays sunrise time, sunset time, moon age, moon phase on the current day or designated days until December 31st, 2039

I’m a geek, I know.

Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Geek toys! I want one!!

Now how did I ever survive without one of those?

Think of all the situations where such a tool could prove indispensible, even lifesaving.

For example, if someone fell through the ice, skating on the pond, I could crawl out as far as possible on my stomach and extend the moonstick across the ice for them to grab onto. Think what a tragedy might have occured if I didn’t have a moonstick with me, ready for just such an emergency.

Or, imagine that you’re trying to round up a herd of stampeding cattle out on the range. Your lasoo has gotten tangled and you’re about to get pulled off your horse and trampled by the thundering hooves. But fortunately, you’ve got your MOONSTICK! (I can’t remember how this one works out, but the moonstick saves the day again.)

Jerry

Because, when you whip out your moonstick (Keep the lowbrow jokes quiet please,), it activates a previously unkown facet of your bodyt, that of a shapechanger! You become an Aussie sheepdog, and end up herding the cattle before the effect fades!!

I felt cranky all day long. I blame the full moon. Of course, I also had to work today. Work makes me more cranky than the moon.

The moon is absolutly beautiful tonight.

So, I’m probably going to try to stablize my mood, meditate for part of the evening and try out an essensial oil blend for vaporizing. Clary Sage and Ylang Ylang are recomended, three drops each.

They didn’t mention that shapechanger feature on the Moonstick website. Is it standard or do you have to order a deluxe model?

(My wife already thinks I’m a sheepdog.)

It’s an easter egg. It’s only available when your lasso tangles herding cattle.

Sure is a bright one!

Does anyone of you werewolves and astronomers know a source for a good

solar compass ?

I’ve been looking for one, pocket-size or why-not wristwatch-based, for years…

Please don’t explain to me the method how to do this with an usual watch. This is what I use for lack of better; it’s pitifully slow, and very approximate if not around noon time, and if you don’t carry a full book of sunset-sunrise tables…
