Rich, you’ve asked that we limit the polling. May I ask if we limit it to 3-5 days, does it make it easier for you to allow them?
I’m seeing a proliferation of polls, and don’t want this neat thing to go away, yet I want to conform to your request for whatever reason you asked us to limit the use of polls.
Secondly, is it easier to have one thread that contains all the questions and comments, or do you not mind multi-threads about your new digs?
By “limit” I mean “use tastefully”, not time or technical limits. Don’t overuse the new feature because people will get tired of it quickly, and because polls have a tendency to replace rather than augment conversation.
That’s not a rule per se – just a “Here’s a new toy, don’t overdo it.” Imagine what the forums would be like if everyone posted a poll to see how they worked…
And remember that there’s always the test forum if you want to test something – and if you’re testing something because you think it’s broken, please use the test forum, because depending on how broken something might be, I can always just go in there and throw away the posts that demonstrated the brokenness, which is a lot more difficult in forums people are depending on to read.
Secondly, is it easier to have one thread that contains all the questions and comments, or do you not mind multi-threads about your new digs?
For problems with the forums – I mean “I can’t post” or “my poll disappeared” or “the text is white on white” or anything that’s really broken or at least suspicious, I’d prefer you send me mail or a private message – that’s the only way I will guarantee that I will see what you wrote. I’m trying to keep up with the comments on the boards but there’s certainly a good chance I might miss an individual comment. “Keeping up” will mostly mean “trying to see it during the day, fixing it if it’s a show-stopper, otherwise responding/fixing in the evening”, since work is very busy right now.
And everyone will like the new forums more if they’re more about whistles and less about the new forums.
An example of distasteful use of polls would be to start one up as a personal attack. On another board, recently, I spotted polls asking, “Who thinks we need to replace the moderator?” and “Who thinks (insertnamehere) is an idiot?”
Yikes, as long as we stay from foul territory, we’re OK.
Just wondering (I figured I’d put all my silly questions in here) what does the ‘watch this topic for replies’ actually do? And what are the arrows by the folders for?
Hey! My LOL emoticon is different this afternoon? or is it just because its a different computer?
oh…very cool! in the forums listing, if you click on the thingy next to the latest post, it takes you STRAIGHT TO THE LATEST POST! Okay…little things excite me when I’m missing this much sleep.
Watch for replies, means anytime someone replies to a topic, you get an email telling you about it. The LOL emoticon is different, because the new forums use a different set. Unless it is an independently supplied one, they will look like the ones to the left when you post a message/reply.
Oh, and the arrows show which topics have new replies since your last visit. There are color changes in the “page” icons next to the topics to do this as well.
Tyghress, whassup w/ the percentage ratings thingum? Is there, like, a clandestine polling function, or is this a matter of recorded “hits” on a post? sigh…I am so ungeek…
N, I clicked on Walden’s name, and beside the heading ‘Interests’ was a percentage…I don’t understand it any more than you do.
As far as the lol emoticon, yesterday day it looked odd…teeth and upper lip doing weird things…remember the poll about it? today, last night even, it looked normal again.
When I first added this emoticon: it was just two staring eyes, which felt a lot more like I felt at the time. After my third shift tonight I will look like the bouncy eyed emoticon.
OK, I got it (I think)! 'Twas a joke. Took me this long, but then again, those who know me understand that I’m not too given to thinking about APR’s and the like…Walden? Did I call it?
