There is a rather nice 1/2 set of new hunter pipes on ebay that I helped him make (Peter doesn’t stitch bags) - please have a look, there’s some of what Mr. Neilly refers to as “bagpipe porn” pictures to look at! I’m happy to email sound clips of the set to anyone who wants them.
We would prefer the set to be picked up from us, so you can hear it singing, but we will post it as long as you understand that we can’t be held responsible for what happens to the reeds on their way to America (for example) in a cold unpressurised aircraft hold.
Hi Sam,say what they want about there favourite pipemaker,
Peter Hunter is still the king pipemaker of today and of this Century without any doubt, the Craftsmanship and finish is awsum,I bet this set just sings, it just oozes quality, perfection, Pure piping porn, I bet that chanter has a good hard “D”, who made the bellows, was it Dan,? Peter Hunter is just Simply the Daddy of Uilleann Pipe making, and really nice fella,I know know him well, helps me with any pipemaking problems. Pipes of this quality, shure quiets the critics.

Sam is one hell of a pipemaker. He is diligently learning his craft from the master of pipemaking. Sam was doing bits and bobs for Peter 10 years ago when I had my concert set made (very much like the one for sale on ebay except in ebony). Sam’s work has everything you would expect from Peter’s work, top (and I mean TOP) quality manufacture, a care and attention to detail that is rare these days/centuries and a sound full of harmonic overtones and partials that a share of us at least would die for.
Sam's a lovely guy, one hell of a musician and a pleasure to deal with from a customer point of view. I couldn't recommend him higher. He is entirely honourable and his work is indistinguishable from Peter's. Peter would say that himself. (Peter guides and scrutinises all of his work – and he is a hard man to please with VERY high standards).
And yes his pipes have that Hunter thing that make you feel unhappy with any other stick after you've been there.
I’m wishing I had a couple of grand spare but I play down in B these days and I already have a one. Doh!
I’m not Davy! But how can I prove this? I could be a Guatemalan blowpipe manufacturer with a flair for diversification for all you lot know, and I could have that Neilly fellow in my pocket . . .
But seriously, I suggest that anyone with a serious interest in the set can phone me on 0044 (0) 1274 779363 to talk to me personally. I can tell you who I’ve carried out work for recently, to their satisfaction. As to what I did and what Peter did, see if you can guess from the photos - I’d be fascinated to hear! eg one of us turned two of the drone mounts, and one of us the other - but which, and who? The standard Peter put on my work was at least as high as he’d put on his own. It was made in Peter’s workshop with his reamers, tools and designs. It’s a Hunter set!
Sam is not Davy Stephenson. I can vouche for that.
And what’s more I’ll wager that if perchance he is proved to be (which I know for a fact he’s not) I categorically state, swear and pledge before God and all of you present I will give Boyd (Hello Boyd! : ) my B set at his next Strathspey in May in exchange for a single pint of the black stuff. (Sorry Boyd that isn’t going to happen).
Is that so? Right Sam I’ll be down for the Guatemalan blowpipe regs at the weekend. Albanian moose wood with vulcanised oasis mounts like a couple of prickly pears and aluminium ferrules in the style of Heinz bean tins.
This is all very Mission Impossible. My advice to anyone interested is phone the man up, go there, play them but be sure and take your cheque book. The added bonus is Yorkshire is nearly as nice as County Down but avoid the curries for those boys like them hot.
Cheers,
Mr. Neilly (Far too fat and fractious to get in anyone’s pocket) feadan24@hotmail.com
"Don’t " bring me into this, I make my own pipe’s,& reeds, I do know Peter Hunter, and have heard Peter mention Sam’s name, saying that sam had worked with himself in the past and was a excellent craftsman, and was also good reedmaker, I can tell Peter made some of the this set, by the style of turning,I have never met the this fella Sam,and I will admit the base drone dos’e resemble the style of Davy Stephenson work,ex’ the metal tube slide tuning piece, but if Peter’s reamer’s & drills cut the bore’s?, this set will be spot on,let me tell you.
Well, I spoke to Peter Hunter last night, here is the Gen,
the bass drone metal slide tuner is Peters design,he designed it around fifteen years back. It was Davy Stephenson who based his pipes of Peter’s Pipes, and not Peter who copied Davy’s.
Confirmation from Peter - "Peter Hunters workshop is taking orders once again for Uilleann Pipes "
“And about time To.”
Cheer’s for the good news Stew, I am so happy to hear this great news, as I’m shure other pipers will also be so happy to hear that one of the greatest pipemakers ever, is involved in making Uilleann pipes once again, the diagrams and knowledge this maker has on making of Uilleann pipes is just amazing, especially on the early makers of Coyne, Harrington,Taylor brothers,Crawley,T.Kenna, to name but a few, he is a walking
encyclopedia on Uilleann Pipes, and all this knowledge should not be wasted,it is just wonderful to hear of his return to the
craft of making Uilleann Pipes.
Thanks to people who like Peter’s work. It’s true that we’re taking orders, except that we’re not - at the moment we’ve got enough and we don’t want a waiting list / ball and chain. This is why the cocobolo set is on ebay, an experiment in making something and then selling it. It occured to me that people might think it was made for somebody who didn’t like it or sent it back - this is categorically not the case - it was made to be a toe in the ebay waters.
