My eBAY listing of that auction shows 2,000GBP = $3429.
I don’t understand why the winning bidder went to £2000 (at which point the reserve was reached, although I’m not sure what the reserve was, it may have been lower) without bidding incrementally by say steps of £25/50 until either he reached the reserve or was the highest bidder at the end of bidding without reaching reserve and in a position to haggle with the seller.
The reserve was most likely £2000. If a person bids £2500, eBay saves you the extra 500 and automatically lowers your bid to match the reserve only. Let’s say one person only is bidding, there’s no way you’d pay more than the reserve no matter how high your bid, or bids. If the reserve was £800 (the next bid down), you would have noticed a “reserve met” sign on the auction. The bids could still go higher though at which point the “reserve met” would have been lost in the shuffle and you might have never noticed what it was.
