New member and player

I have recently become interested in Irish music. I have ordered two low price whistles, a Clarke Celtic Whistle, and a Walton’s Mellow D Brass, along with a book called Fun With the TinWhistle. I look forward to attempting to learn how to play.

I am also going to try to learn to play the Bodhran.

This forum looks great, it looks like everyone is very encouraging to one another. I look forward to getting to know you guys better.

Willkommen!

You should also get the book and CD written by Bill Ochs. It’s the best, and everybody will tell you so.

And post over at the general discussion forum lots, too.

Have fun with your whistles.

Actually, I think, for getting started all you need is a fingering chart and some sheet music.
I have a ton of ‘learning’ materials that I never really used. I think I read through one of the tutorial books, but the educational links from the main site could’ve told me all that.

Not to say that there’s anything wrong with the Bill Ochs book, just that the whistle is, well,
really pretty simple to play, and in retrospect, I should’ve spent the money somewhere else. Of course, at the time, part of it was just for the tunes in those books, but all the tunes are listed over at thesession.org anyway, -and- of course, I got the O’Neill’s book.

Still, maybe -one- instruction book would be good. Hm.

Hi Mike,

Welcome to our little slice of the world. I hope that you enjoy! I have found the MadForTrad series of computer CD’s quite nice. They have a good Whistle one with Brian Finnegan (who is a phenominal player that plays for Flook) and the Bodhran CD is quite good as well. These would be a good way for you to hear and see good players doing what they do best. The website is www.madfortrad.com .

So, welcome again and may you have many happy years of playing.

Erik

Welcome, Mike!

This can be a great place for information, possibly even some about whistles and playing the music. Check out the main website for the Chiff, as well as this forum. There’s a very nice section for beginners, plus near the bottom is a “tune-of-the-month” section. It took me a year of lurking before finding this jewel. The main thing to remember is to enjoy yourself, in learning the whistle and the bodhran.

Have fun!

Welcome!

I also am very impressed by the Bill Ochs book, it’s very well done.

You’ve found a friendly place here, I hope you enjoy it and I wish you much joy in playing your whistles,
