Welcome to the WWW (wonderful world of whistles). You’re in for a LOT of fun.
You mention that you have a lot of musical backround. I think that this is good, and although some people would argue that learning by ear is the only way to go, I believe that reading music is a terrific skill to have.
On the other hand, if your backround is classical, it may temporarily hinder you a bit. I know wherein I speak since I came to whistle playing via recorder playing where I was ( and am) a pretty fair amateur player. I had a hard time getting the feel, rhythm, and drive of Celtic music. Also, I tended to try to play the Irish ornaments like Baroque ones, which sounded awful. Best way I know to get over this is with a CD/book whistle tutor combo like Bill Ochs’ The Clarke Tinwhistle. If you read music already, you’ll breeze through the early sections, but as you progress through the lessons and listen to the accompanying musical examples, you’ll develop a real feel for this wonderful music. There are other tutors out there that are very good too eg LE McCullough’s-- I’m just most familiar with the Ochs.
Welcome and enjoy your stay! ![]()
Having been a pianist, “keyboardist”, and “semi”- guitarist for quite a few years, I was overwhelmed when I found Chiff and Fipple and discovered the awesomely wonderful world of whistling.
Welcome, enjoy your journey, and don’t be a stranger!!!
