advice for beginner

Hello Chiff & Fipple world,

I am new to all this. I do not have much musical experience at all to begin with, and I want to learn to play the irish whistle. I have already purchased a Clarke Sweetone D. My question I guess was, are there any recommended reading and tutorials out there that would help a guy like me out? I have checked out the recommendations from thewhistleshop.com but I would also like to hear it from others on here…

Thanks

Welcome!

There’s lots of advice already posted in the forum archive. Try using the search function or browse for a while, but do come back with more specific questions.

This will give you everything you need to get well started:

Take it slow, go carefully through each lesson, listening to the accompanying CD tracks and you’ll be playing in no time. You’ll also learn to read music which is a big bonus. I can’t recommend this set highly enough.

I’ll second that recommendation, Bill Och’s tutor really is great.
Other advice you’ll see here is to listen as much as possible to the great whistlers.
Welcome and good luck.

I think he’s already checked the resources that brewerpaul and maki have recommended…

I’ll third that recommendation … that is the book that got me going.

From there … hang around here. Set up a Pandora station playing Irish traditional music. Listen to the Clare FM broadcast archives (available on their website). Find tunes you want to learn, find the music (ABC format or sheet music), find performances (YouTube is a wonderful resource among many others).

Ryan Duns on YouTube has a series of beginner lessons that is really helpful.

G’day from oz everyone, I am also new to whistling my background is Banjo’s (please don’t throw rocks, I have mended my ways) as for advice for beginners there is no better place to be than right here. I have learned so much just by reading the older posts. This is my first posting, thank you for all the tips and advise that have by posted by the experts. Cheers

Thank you all so much for your advice and the kind welcome. Ochs’ book looks like the winner!
