Yes Tom she is - her earlier recording: An Raicín Álainn (The Beautiful Comb) has become something of a staple in the tradition as I’ve heard. Great stuff. Lovely voice and some highly tasteful backings. Brian, if I recall from one of our chats down in your basement pub there, you met her or saw her perform out on the Aran Islands some time back yes? Lucky dog!
She has a lovely strong voice, a bit smoky at times. This is refreshing in an area that has a lot of women singing in weak falsettos. Also, she is the first woman I know of to record Bean Phaidín, a women’s song, but always recorded by men in the past - one of my favourite songs. That made her my instant favourite.
Great to know she has a new recording out. Thanks for the info, Brian.
I’ve got an album called Lights in the Dark, featuring leading sean-nos singers, of course including Lasairfhiona. I’ve also leanrt a gaelic phrase or two from her song Amhran na Paise (I’m still learning). Quite a good singer, she is.
