I’m quite fond of Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill, and her sister Triona, whose voice is somewhat more shrill. Triona can be heard singing with the Bothy Band, Touchstone, and Relativity.
Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh of Altan sings mostly in Irish. I love her singing, as well as her fiddling.
I agree with all of the above.
The O’Dhomhnaill Sisters are probably the most readily accessable singers in this field as they have recorded many albums featuring songs in the Irish language.Dolores Keane has done a few as well but to my ear she never really seems to be comfortable singing in Irish.Mary Black does a masterful version of Mo Ghile Mar,thats the one that Sting butchered with some help from the Chieftains.
Sinead O’Connor does a few on her Sean nos nua album but I should imagine that Cran already knows that
Thinking about Wombats quip…Mary Coughlan singing in Irish ?..now that would be something else altogether..
Yes, I rather like Sinéad’s Irish language music…but it’s more poppy (imagine that!) than much other Irish music.
Her version of “My Lagan Love” and Niamh Parson’s are so radically different, if they didn’t have the same title I’m not sure I’d hear them as the same song!
I heard Mairead Ni Dhomhnaill singing ‘Amhrán Pheadar Breathnach’ on a TV programme.
Donal Lunny’s bouzouki playing added an exciting background to Mairead soaring voice, but the version on her solo CD was spoilt by a plodding production.
what a pity, though she’s got a couple of nice solo cuts on Danú’s “Up in the Air”. i’m sure you’ll hear more from her though. i saw her with Danú recently and she’s enormously talented as well as being very easy on the eyes.
I don’t think so. I e-mailed him awhile ago and he was in the States so he couldn’t check. He said he would when he got back. I forgot about it for awhile and I fired off an e-mail again a month ago but still no reply, and I hate peppering people with e-mails. It was a good idea though glauber.
