OT: Sean Nós...

I’m sure someone out there has researched this before, so I’m going to ask the experts who have already weeded through thousands of Sinéad sites. Sean nós.. nua indeed.

Are there any good sean nós resources on the web?

Any CD reccomendations?

Any book reccomendations?

The only collections I have that come close are:

Ceolta Gael 1 & 2 (decent printing, some trad lyrics I’m familiar with are missing, but that may be region-specific)

Cas Amhrán (notation looks hand-notated by a young teen, but readable. Could be re-done.)

Amhráin mhuighe seóla (reprinting of a 1923 book, galway & mayo specific songs. Uses old style Irish lettering / marks for séimhiú agus urú. Some notation reproductions faint. Great resource, though.)

Thanks much!

Dionys

RTE has some recordings for sale.

This, by the way, is ON TOPIC, not OFF topic as you feared.

Playing airs should be about mimicking the sean-nós

True enough, Boyd.. And thanks to everyone for the responses!

Hello,
Scoiltrad have just released a DVD ROM study of Sean Nos singing featuring singers from Ireland and Scotland (Mairead Ni Dhomhnaill, Eoini Maidhci O Suilleabhain, Joise Sheain Jeaic MacDonnacha (all from Ireland), Maggie MacInnes and Anne Martin (from Scotland). As well as in-depth interviews with each of the singers, words of the songs are also provided as is a study of technique in each song. Featuring 20 songs in total, the DVD ROM is trilingual (Gaeilge, Gaidhlig and English) with translations of all materials provided. The DVD ROM is PC compatible only and can be got from our web-site at http://www.scoiltrad.com in the Recordings of Scoiltrad Musicians section.
I hope this is helpful and not too commercially inclined.

Patrick.

(Howaya Conal! Up Cork!)

Pat, besides your apparent fondness for Christy Moore, can you tell me if he has any albums in the sean-nós tradition? I thought he was just a regular folk singer (aside from Planxty).

Thx,

djm

Nope, none in the sean nós style really. He is great though, everyone should have a couple of his albums atleast… especially his stuff with Moving Hearts.

Patrick.

Christy Moore is actually the reason I got started in the whole ITM / uilleann piping thing back in the late 1980s. One Christy Moore album lead me to Planxty which introduced me to Liam O’Flynn which got me interested in the uilleann pipes. The rest is a downward spiral into the addiction with the pipes.

I am very taken at the moment by a CD of archive recordings of Sorcha ni Guairim 's singing. Gael Linn has it. CEFCD182.
