Dance tunes and instrumental airs in all their glory, I’ve lately found an increased interest in songs (they used to be the tracks I skipped on albums).
I’ve mainly listened to Clancy Brothers, Ossian, Luke Kelly, Bothy Band and Julie Fowlis. What I like the most are the songs sung by Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill and Mícheál Ó Domhnaill in Bothy Band recordings.
Would be grateful for suggestions on more musicians/bands and albums with good songs.
Thanks.
June Tabor and Keane/Faulkner were new to me and I really liked what I heard after checking them out on eMusic.
Danu and Christy Moore I’ve heard before actually. More fond of the latter. And Paul Brady is admittedly a good singer, but not very folky in the songs I’ve heard.
Are there any other “must know” singers in the irish or scottish folk music (I feel I know of enough good english folk singers)?
Glad you found something to your liking. Those were names off of the top of head, also artist I have listened to recently.
I was thinking of earlier Paul Brady recordings.Someone I forgot to mention… I don’t know his name, but the singer for Kornog.
Rhadge,
I am particularly moved by Triona’s sister, Maighread_Ní_Dhomhnaill
I am talking about her rendition of Sean O Duibhir A Ghleanna as an example.
The one on the Lament compilation.
