NE WHISTLE GATHERING A SUCCESS

If this is your first time looking at the thread, please read on. All others, please go to my latest message. Thanks.

Alrighty folks, I’ve been to Look Park and I have talked with the management there.

We can meet at Look Park, July 25th. I would say noon to whenever.

This is a state park and it will require some $$$.

It’s like $3-4 per car for parking and if we are going to picnic, it will cost $1.00 per person. It’s $10 per table, so be prepared to get cozy with your fellow whistlers unless you want to spring for your own table.

No one else is taking this, so I volunteer to coordinate.

I need to know how many people are coming in order to reserve tables. It would be best if you acknowledge right here on the board. That way people will see who plans on attending and that will generate some excitement.

So…right here, in this thread, let me know who you are and how many people you are bringing along.

Please don’t clutter the thread with I wish I could make it…or can’t we have it here…or wouldn’t this be better.

The date is fast approaching. If we want this to happen, I need a definite show of support.

The park is really very nice. There is tons of stuff to do for all members of the family. A train ride, a zoo, bumper boats, paddle boats, ball fields, basketball courts…etc.

Check the web site… http://www.lookpark.org/

I would love to say we can get a pavillion or shelter, but they are pretty expensive. So we’ll just have to wing it and hope the weather cooperates.

So who can definetly make it?

Mike

I can make it…if the park is that nice, I’ll probably bring the fambly. So make that two adults and two kids, although one adult and the kids might flee the scene in favor of the train ride, etc.!

By the way, thanks for coordinating it! The cost is fine, we’ll probably spend more in gas getting there.

Make that a definite yes, unless it’s snowing in which case I’ll have to beg off…

Robin

I expect to be there. Arleen and the children are interested, but we won’t know for sure until the time comes. I’d say they’re about 90% likely to make it. (That would be two adults and six children.) Sounds great.

Best wishes,
Jerry

Ah, the cozy purring sound of efficiency. You don’t have German ancestry, by any chance?

I’ll be there, definitely, unless I can’t make it. And I’ll be incognito. One adult.

Just about the only way I could make it… Is if one of the other Northerners Picks me up on the way down  I don’t have any vehicles reliable enough to make the trip… I could possibly bring a few PVC and Carbon Composite whistles with me…  Is Brewerpaul going?? He lives in new York… I don’t know if two makers “ridesharing” would be a safe thing…

EDIT
Ooops I got confused… Mass is the other way… Ok about the only way I could make it is if one of the Southerners.. Maryland…Virginia… picks me Up on the way up… Dang Mass is about a 3 hour trip from here from the closest border. 'Course If I aint driving I could pass the time… whistling and driving everyone nuts. Warning those of you Not Used to driving through new york should not drink too much coffee, the extra stimulents might make you go crazy and run those NY drivers of the road after they cut you off and then flip you the bird…

I’m in for sure. Charlene may or may not make it depending on her rehearsal schedule for a production of Oliver.

I’ll be there, and probably Tyghre too, but someone mentioned ‘train’ and his ears perked up, so he may excuse himself for a while and go trainspotting.

Weekend before I’ll be at DRAM, trying to figure out if I want to play a Swiss piccolo and hang out with a bunch of fifers for the long haul.

I would love to go but I can’t make it to MA that particular weekend.

I’ll be there with two bandmates (whistle, flute, mandolin) Patrick Dunn

Bump.

C’mon folks, we can do better than this!!
Personally, I’m willing to make the 2ish hr trip even if only the current list shows up, but is would sure be nice to have more folks there.

Double Bump. C’mon people you can do better this this. “You are not even human(censored)beings! You are nothing but unorginized grabasstic pieces of amphibian(censored)!”

Well, maybe we can chalk it up to it being a holiday week/end, etc. (I hope). I mean, c’mon people, it has a water spray park!!! I may also bring along my bike for a morning ride around the park, if we get there early.

Robin

Second that! We’ve got some bodies together here. It’s a BIG park.

AND I’ll bring my little whistle collection (not that I am much of a collector, but still).

As it stands, I have a work commitment that weekend, hmph.

Loren

Give me Friedrich or Patrick’s phone number!.. tell them this IS a work commitment since you plan on showing off some of their superb work..

Well, as you probably know, we take instruments and music to many of the summer early music festivals and shows. This year the scheduling is such (some festivals changed from their usual dates) that we have 3 commitments on the same weekend…

I’d love to be able to bring some instruments for folks to check out, although I doubt Pat will let me out of the shop with that carved solid Ivory Denner Alto he just finished, and we can’t even mention the Grenadilla Bressan that Friedrich finished up a few months ago: You wouldn’t believe the ornate silver inlay on this thing - took nearly a year to complete! :boggle:

Anyway, looks like I’ll have to wait till next year.

Drool!!! Any way you could get some pics of those?
People, these are MAJORLY talented instrument makers.
Loren-- are those instruments special orders, or will they be in the shop for a while. I may have to make a road trip to check those out. Easily worth a 3 hr drive.

I do have pictures of the Bressan, but they didn’t come out well, and I don’t have a way to upload them via the library computers I’m stuck using.

I’m not sure where that flute is at the moment, it’s not right in the shop, so it may be out on trial.

The Ivory Denner Alto, as well as an uncarved Sopranino, are special orders which I expect to go out soon.

Oddly enough, we typically have a relatively small number of completed instruments in the shop at any one time, mostly people are already waiting for whatever we are working on. It’s really sort of amusing in a way because, as you’ll see when you visit the shop, we generally have around 700 or so instruments nearly completed, but only a handful completely tuned, voiced, and completely buffed and looking pretty, the other 600 and something are all on racks, partially finished, and covered with wood and cork dust ! One day the instrument looks a bit like a collection of neglegted project parts, and a few days later it may be a $3000 Tenor Recorder that looks like a piece of highly polished fine furniture! That thought always cracks me up for some reason.

Certainly drop me a line in advance when you want to come visit the shop - I’ll give you the grand tour and we can compare notes on the venerable Craftsman Atlas lathes, of which we have 5, along with our 3 Southbend, and 1 Rockwell. I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of seeing how we broach windways, cut ramps, and make our blocks which are tapered… In fact I’ll buy you lunch while you’re in town if you can figure out how we make those before you get here.

If I know we’re going to have a bunch of instruments coming back from the shows, and I know they’ll be around for a while, I’ll drop you a line to let you know, in case you want to time a visit that way.

I can relate to the first part-- after working on a batch of whistles, all of a sudden they sort of come together as if by magic and I have several finished instruments sitting there.

I’ll be curious to see your Atlas machines, as I use one of these myself, although it’s only a little 6" (no jokes please) one. I will definitely be interested in seeing how you do windways and ramps. I have already pondered the making of your blocks extensively, and don’t worry too much about buying me that lunch.. I’m in the dark.
People, for those interested in such things, in most recorders the block is not a simple cylinder (or tapered cylinder). The windway is cut into the roof of the wood, and part of the block rises up into the windway. A mystifying bit of machining that I will be thrilled to see done.

Just a week left.

If you plan to attend, let me know now. I’ll be putting the reservations in on Tuesday. After that, you’re on your own.

Seeya there!

Mike
