Bay Area Winter Gathering: Feb 11

A few folks over on the flute forum have raised the question about when the next SF Bay Area gathering would be, but I haven’t seen any discussion elsewhere.

Over the last few years, we’ve averaged one every 6 months or so - the last was an early-summer gathering at Chez Higgins in the east bay.

Is there any interest in a Winter C & F gathering somewhere in the SF Bay area? The last one in the South Bay was at my place in San Jose - if enough people are interested we’d be willing to give it a try again sometime in the late January through March timeframe - date to be determined by interest level and conflicts.

If this comes off, I’d prefer to avoid the Piper’s Club Tional weekend - too many will want to attend. Ditto St. Patrick’s Day - too many have gigs. But if those work out the best for majority of folks interested, they’re OK with me. However, I do travel a lot on business, sometimes on short notice - I can reserve the chosen weekend to make sure I’m in town, but the earlier I do so the better.

So - what’s the interest level?

EDIT: For folks just joining the thread, the party will be Saturday, Feb 11 here in San Jose. It’s an unstructured potluck - bring what you’d like, if you can. We’ll provide drinks, snacks, and utensils. Come when you’re free - there’ll be folks here from early afternoon on. If you need directions, email (preferred) or PM me.

Hope to see you this Saturday!

I miss you all. I’ll come down there no prob. My only commitment so far in times listed is Feb. 4 evening gig.

I’m definitely up for it. My only conflicts, at this juncture, are the weekend of Feb. 18/19 (my daughter’s birthday and confirmation) and Sunday, Jan. 29 (I’m singing in a choral Evensong service).

My daughter keeps asking “when is there going to be another C&F gathering?”

Redwolf

Love to see you both again, too.

Weeks, if you’re coming I definately need to brush up on the tunes for rowdy songs. You know “Happy Jack’s Undrinkable Ale” or “Itches in my britches?” :smiling_imp:

Redwolf, my #2 daughter says she’d like to see yours, too - they email each other sometimes. Be interesting to do a size comparison - I think Johanna’s still taller, but Alina’s really shot up since last year.

Over on the flute board, feadogin/Justine was talking about coming along with a flute player - I’m guessing that means Stout

Oh, I wouldn’t assume that!
Jack is always up for a few tunes, but I think I might be able to talk a different one into coming, too.

My request is that it not be on the first Sunday of any month, because I have the Pipers’ Club meetings. Sunday nights are not great for me, either, cause that’s my session night.

See you all there!

Justine

I’ll plug that in, Justine: not the first weekend of the month, not Sunday (I think Saturdays work better for most folks, anyway).

And the more the merrier, flute player or not (though I can certainly use all the roll - and tap - and cut - models I can get  ). I’m currently on a trip - once I get back I’ll check for possible conflicts in my own schedule and post a list of possible dates. I’d appreciate a go/no go list like Justine’s, Weekender’s, and Redwolf’s from those who have some dates locked up - then we can try to pick a date that works for the most people.

See you all there, I hope!

Dana: I have learned a buncha sea shanties, some with dirty lyrics that make for nice whistlin’ along tunes. I have a gig on Feb 4 directing a yacht club through an hour’s worth so it’s current. Red and I can sing up the place while Jack and Justine wince. Schedule is pretty clear. Did we eliminate last weekend in January? The sooner the better, I say!

Or we could do an anti-SuperBloat day, whenever that is this year… It’s a Sunday but the roads are usually extra-clear…

I’ve got a song or two in Irish under my belt as well.

Redwolf

I’ve learned a few songs this past year, too, if y’all can believe it. And if MikeyLikesIt comes, he has some good songs, too.

Dana, you do know that it’s in Seattle this year, right??

MikeyLikesIt and I went to the same class with Mary, so I bet we know the same songs.

Speaking of which, Mike, if you’re out there…do you want a lift to this shindig?

Jan. 29 was one of the days I couldn’t make it, Weeks. I’m going to be up to my eyebrows in Anglican choral music.

Redwolf

Feb 11???

That one I could do.

Redwolf

Feb. 11th works for me.

I was gettin pretty psyched until that blather came up about sea chanties and all. Hmm… Will I be the only one playing tin whistle?? Anyway, it’s Week’s turn to drive, so I may have a drink or two (to deal with the sea chanties). (What am I letting myself in for?)
Tony

Well, I’ll be blowing on the whistle as much as the flute. If you’re feeling charitable you could call it playing, I suppose.

I should be back from my trip tomorrow - I’ll try to nail down my travel schedule by Friday. It sounds like the 11th of February works for most people - now to find if it’s an available weekend.

Dana C.

Well, Tony, I know its hard when everybody doesn’t have all of their attention focused on you and the tunes that only you play solo, but try and be magnaminous, just this once.

And sure…I’ll…DRIVE :smiling_imp:

I’ll play your tunes with you, Tony. Never mind those other characters… :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll play tunes too, so long as we get to play O’Keefe’s Slide at LEAST once! No one in my session here knows it (or seems interested in learning it), and I’m going through withdrawals.

Redwolf

I’ll play your tunes with you, Tony. Never mind those other characters…

Characters? You’re too kind. Poltroons would be more apt. Loathesome creatures from the far dark corner of the bog. (I say that with all due respect.)
So happens I’ve been practicing O’Keefe’s Slide, so we’ll see it gets played. We can teach it to Weekender so he won’t feel left out. He can make up dirty lyrics if he likes. :smiling_imp:
