Mandrel

Anyone know where I can purchase a suitable piece of steel to make a mandrel suitable for making staples for flat chanters?

regards,
Mark.

radionics.ie and axminster.co.uk have silver steel rod in various diameters.

Thanks Bill,

much appreciated,

regards,
Mark.

No need to go to all that trouble…I think.

Just use the right diameter nail. Some nails are a little on the soft side, but if all you are using them for is annealed copper, you will do just fine. Been using nails for years both for forming and rolling.

I use a small screwdriver. Just get one that the shaft will fit inside your tubing, and then use a file to shape it to form the eye.

IMO nails and screwdrivers are fine as raw material if you file them carefully to shape. You may find a nail a bit short though, and it will eventually deform under the hammer blows even if you are using annealed copper.
