Manchester Monthly Meetings

The first Manchester Monthly Pipers meeting will be on Wednesday 26th January at St.Catherine’s Social Club, School Lane, Didsbury, Manchester, starting at 7.30pm. (I will post a map soon).

All are welcome.

Due to the way scheduling happens at the club we will get the dates of future Wednesdays available for the first meeting.

Teaching will always be available to anyone that would like some.

Anyone that doesn’t play and would like to try a set out will be welcome.

We have a Dave Williams practice set that can be lent out to anyone that wishes to have a more serious go before trying to obtain an instrument. (This is currently with someone but a waiting list will be put together if there is sufficient interest.)

Ian O’Brien will help with maintenance although he will be away skiing during the first meeting. Plenty of advice and self help stuff will be available.

We are hoping people will agree on a £3 contribution per session (less if you are short a bob or two) to go into funds (currently totalling £30) to finance/subsidise: putting on gigs, paying good pipers to put up with our company for a few hours, buying dvds, books etc that people may wish to use at meetings.

The structure is loose and after running for a few months we can make some collective decisions as to how to proceed.

The bar always has 2 proper ales on, plenty of room for playing tunes and there are some useful small spaces around the building for teaching and individual practice.

Hopefully we will get off to a good start, if anyone wants better contact details pm me.

David

Hi David,
I will try and get to this meeting. Good on you for organising such an event. I hope it’s well attended.

Hello David, Great idea, please count me in! Good luck with the organisation, Teirw

Ben, it would be great if you could make it, it will give you a chance to get used to seeing groups of pipers with slack jaws and tongues hanging out.

Teirw, thanks, I’ll look forward to seeing you and hearing your new c# chanter.

Not wanting to take all the credit and/or blame, Jim Horan and Terry Johnson are also involved in organising this.

David

Hi David - I’ll be there too, though will probably be a bit on the late side (will bring note from my mum ). Good on you all for getting things together!

Hi David, I’d like to come too but will also be a bit late as I work till 8 on wednesday’s in Stockport. Perhaps Becky’s mum can write me a note too
cheers
Marky

Will there be tea? and perhaps a sticky bun (or 2)

Ben, beware the sticky buns! I hear-tell they’re a reformed smoker’s worst enemy!

Tea and coffee will be available from the bar at 8pm. Prior to that we have access to a kitchenette with full catering facilities and a microwave. The Chairman says we can even cook dinner if we want, although he is keen to improve bar takings in terms of liquid refreshments.

Maybe I should bake a cake to celebrate.

Free self adhesive sticky bun patches will also be on hand
Although I’ve always found they can play havoc with your A roll.

And no one else late please or Becky’s mum will end up with a very sore wrist.

David

Nice one Dave, I’ll try and get down with some more examples of native reed making materials.
More vintage Doctor Who Ben; android with positronic brain if I’m not mistaken.

Not any more…changed again(23:11)

Excellent idea, let’s hope that it does well. Should be able to make a few meetings from February onwards.

Good to meet a few old(ish) friends again too

It’s just above the “E” of SCHOOL LANE on the map. Zoom out for main road details.

It’s looking like it may be a big turn out for the first night. We’ll try and get as much teaching done as possible early on to give time for playing and renewing acquaintances.

From the Chiffers ranks BenW, Beckitybek, Maw, teirw and John S have all said they will be down. We may even get a pipemaker along.

Other good news is that a several people who have sets but can’t play yet are going to (re)start learning.

The bad news is that the Chairman failed to tell us that the Cub Scouts will be in the main hall area until 8pm.

We will occupy the Bar area from 7.30pm before marching on mass, pipes wailing, driving all small children from the area shortly after 8pm.

See you there

David

Drive out those para military organisations

That’s not a bad location for me about 1/2 a mile from East Didsbury or Burnage train Station; should be able to get back to Piccadilly for the last tram at 11:26 without having to leave too early.

John S

Well done David and Jim! was a top night of tunes and piping banter, count Aiden and myself in for the next one.

marcus.

Aye, well done
I was amazed that there were so many pipers in the area. looking forward to the next one too

Mark

Sorry folks, for some reason I’d got it in my head that the first one was in February (Doh).
I’m glad there was a good turnout and (Alzheimer’s allowing) I’ll try to get to the next one.

John S

Yes, all went well for a first night.

We had over 20 pipers present. Ranging from complete beginners to those with 4 regs under their belt.

Some pipers travelled from afar a field as Liverpool, Birmingham and Wrexham.

10 people had one to one lessons lasting about 15mins each. Teaching was done by Liam Murphy, Jim Horan and myself. Other pipers have volunteered to get involved in the teaching next time.

Plenty of piping went on, lots of good playing was heard and some mighty tunes got an airing. Those that wanted more headed down to the Welcome for the Wednesday night session.

I hope everyone that turned up got something out of the evening.

Based on Wednesday’s turnout it looks like we will be able to maintain a regular monthly meeting.

Dates for future meeting will be published shortly.

If anyone wants to be on our email list for further updates pm me your address.
