Lunasa these days

I’m going to see Lunasa live for the first time next month, what program can I expect to hear these days? Do they play sets from their CD’s or rather new combinations?
Anyway can’t wait to hear them.
Greets peeps

Erik

Hi Erik. I saw them a couple of years ago and already had all of their 3 cd’s. (There’s a 4th now- Redwood) I recognized quite a few tunes from the cd’s, though not everything they played. Kevin Crawford was the speaker for the band and he commented that they alternate between several concert sets. I think band members take turns picking the tunes for the night and they each have favorites. Expect an excellent show.

When I saw them in July, they’re were doing a good variety: stuff from their first album, Merry Sisters, Redwood, stuff they hadn’t recorded, and even a set off Sean Smyths solo album. However, this was several months ago…

It’s been 18 months since I’ve seen Lunasa, so I can’t say for certain, but every time I’ve seen them, they played a number of new tunesets that would appear on a future album, and usually a couple of tunes that aren’t on any of their albums. I actually managed to learn a couple of the newly-composed tunes on Merry Sisters of Fate before that album was released…

I saw them in July and they played mostly a variety of tunes off all their CD’s. I saw them outside and they had limited time so I’m sure in a different setting when they are the focus of the evening they probably play some new stuff as well.
I can tell you one thing, if you think they sound good on recording’s, they will knock your socks off live, It’s a fabulous concert, sit back, enjoy and take it all in. Have fun, wish I were there.

Thank you all folks, I’m sure I will have fun, John McSherry, Michael McGoldrick, Dónal O’Connor and Tony Byrne also perform together on the same concert… so imagine

Hmmm… that’s a lineup not quite as exciting to me as Lunasa and Crowd of Bold Sharemen at Celtic Colours last week, but still pretty damn drool-worthy.

(Just checked the Celtic Colours website, and noticed that Flook, bohola, John Doyle, Jerry Holland, etc were also there (are also there, think it’s still on-going) this week. Sigh.)

Hi Sweetone,
Lunasa and McSherry, McGoldrick, O’Connor and Byrne, all on the same night!!! You are going to have a night to remember. I saw McSherry, McGoldrick and O’Connor with Paul McSherry last year, wow :boggle: They played a lot of stuff off the CD “At First Light”. If anyone tells you that the sound they get is due to recording effects, don’t believe it, they sound just as good live, the sounds McGoldrick can get from a flute or whistle have to be heard to be believed. Check out Donal O’Connor at http://www.gerryoconnor.net/donalweb/index.htm

Don’t forget to let us know how it went

Cheers, Mac

Tony Byrne was in Finland last year with Gavin Whelan and Neil Lyons. He’s on of the best guitarists I’ve ever met. He was excellent some years back Sinook but he’s become even better. There’s really something to expect.

[/quote]I’ll keep you informed

Just heard Redwood for the first time a week ago. After their first three albums, I have to admit I wasn’t nearly as impressed as I thought (and HOPED) I would have been.

In comparison to their previous three albums, this one didn’t seem to have the same energy and fire. Could just be that it will take several months for me to “get into” this one which I hope someday I will be able to.

Their musicianship is first-rate as always, just uninspiring to my ear as far as the tracks went on this latest venture.

Ah well - I’m certain any of their concerts would be great.

I, on the other hand, like Redwood a lot, and I particularly appreciate the more “laid back” style of most of the tunes, compared with those on their older CDs (which I love as well, mind you).

To echo MacEachain, yikes-a-hootie!! Lúnasa and those four! I’m afraid you might get a sensory overload or something. But having the opportunity (from a flute player’s point of view) of hearing Kevin Crawford and Mike McG on the same day sounds too cool. I am pretty envious, you know…
