Gee, I can almost hear what sounds like it might be UPs buried under all the guitars etc.
Does Cillian have a solo album out? The one he did with his brother tended to bury the UPs under the concertina. I wonder if he’s shy, or just not ready to commit?

BTW - I really like Cillian and Niall’s Callan Bridge. I wouldn’t say the UP is buried its just that they can play so “tight” it is hard to distinguish the intruments individual voices.
I particularly like Niall’s tune Once in a Blue Moose - unfortunately it doesn’t sit well on the pipes. (C set or not)

It is a great record, that one. I had a bit of a chucke at first hearing the old nugget “Craig’s pipes” as the opening track, but the boys really blew it out of the water- an excellent version of a good old chewen. When I last saw Captain Craw(ford)fish, he mentioned that the idea behind this record was to have a studio job that sounded more ‘live’ than the previous work. I think they did a really great job at it. More relaxed and not so produced.
BTW Patrick- I’m making the B jump- off to the bank!

“Craig’s pipes” is one of my favorite tunes. It stretches my musical mind in all the right ways. If only modern musicians could write such good tunes. There has to be something about the old guys, and the day and age in which they lived, which lended itself to better musical imagination.

Somebody gave me a copy of this, I would never waste my dosh on this sort of stuff. Apart from sounding like the Kevin Crawford show, it’s just over-produced, over arranged and not particularly all that closely related to Irish trad music, with every cliche in the book thrown at it to a rocky/jazz accompaniment and I can’t abide it.
So if I sound like your grandad moaning about this modern beat music stuff it’s because this is exactly how I feel.
I will have to stick to the old stuff like Clancy and Ennis and other old duffers whose chanters were always out of tune and they couldn’t play for nuts but in my poor enfeebled mind they are the masters - did I manage to catch up with the last three or four threads simultaneously there!!

I really don’t think you can argue that Clancy, Ennis, O’Brien-Moran and pipers of that solid traditional genre are not only due the utmost respect but also the acknowledgement of being the bedrock on which traditional piping is continuing to be grounded. That’s beyond amazing.
Lunasa is a band. Every member of that band has exceptional talent. The music speaks beautifully and I love it. It’s not painful to be progressive so get over yourself and enjoy what you like to listen to. The coolest old duffers I know are the ones who never say never.[/u]
