low whistle on ebay

I bought one of these whistles on ebay & was wondering if anyone knew anything about the maker or the quality or what?

Yeah, me too. I figured for the price it was worth the gamble! Keep you fingers crossed.

I bought one (high D) just about two months ago. Mine is fair, but not really that good. I’ll be interested to see how others turn out.

So, after I sent my last post, I played the whistle a bit and wondered if I hadn’t been too dismissive. It may have a fair sound here and there, but it’s still too grating in the upper register – too loud.

I’ve made a recording of the whistle playing South Wind, followed by the same tune on a Susato. I think you’ll be able to get a sense for how it sounds by comparison (taking into account my imperfect playing).

[Clips removed]

Even when pushing hard in the upper register with the Susato (and perhaps over-blowing), the sound of the Brady whistle is more harsh (to my ears) by comparison.

Anyway, there you have the clip.

Edited to add: I’ve taken down the clips that the links go to. If someone wants a clip now, please PM me.

well, I got the low in today & I think all in all its not too bad, a little breathy but certainly worth the money.

I’m glad it’s to your liking. The Low D, given the price, may be a better deal than the high D.

Do you have other low D whistles to compare it to? If so, what would you say it’s most like? How are you finding the breath requirements? With the High D I find the second Octave takes a lot of push, with the G, A, and the B taking an extra-ordinary amount. As I say, yours may be different, so I’m curious.

I got mine today and I have to agree with pippintook, it’s very breathy but not to bad. The construction, material and certainly the paint job give this whistle a bit of a “toy” feel to it, but it is certainly playable, and the second octave is actually quite nice. I think it might not be quite in tune, but I’ll have to put it to a tuner to be sure. It’s made from a thin wall plastic, but doesn’t seem to be PVC pipe. This could make a nice camping whistle. As to comparing it to other Low D’s, an Overton it certainly is Not, however, for the price ($22.00) you just can’t complain to much.

Hey khl, as you are in Hawaii, any chance you can dig up more info on this Brady guy who makes these? I’d like to add it to my website. Thanks!

When I got the email from them, I checked out their website. They are located on the big island (Hawaii – where the active volcano is); I’m on Oahu. They do all sorts of entertainment things – a family run business – and seem like good folks. In checking things out just now, I found this link to the instruments they sell:

And to this page that links to the whistle WITH SOUND CLIPS of both high and low whistles:

On the video clips page you can find a clip of the guy and his band playing pipes, guitar, bodhran, etc. (no whistle music): http://www.lobodelmar.com/Dogwatchwhenthepipersplayvideoclip.html
