Kudos to David Power for opening his home, hospitality, piping wit and wisdom.

The day started early with reedmaking 101 in David’s basement. We rubbed elbows and fought over 2 stanley knives. We each embarked upon our own reed venture sharing both knowledge and ignorance were appropriate. We drank stout, listened to some fine fiddle and Pipe Music including a new cd not yet relaeased. POWERful Stuff. David oversaw , providing practical advise and tips on the reedmaking process. I helped by throwing a monkey wrench at David every time he strayed form the strict practices of reedmaking COOKBOOK.

Micheal commented that he could see the crew at work through the basemnent window on his way to the front door. There we were, all huddled around the work bench, sanding, cutting, scraping, and hammering. Soon our toes began to curl upward and you could hear whistles of merriment. It was downright scary to the point of which we had to turn off the Ennis’ Fairy Story for fear of getting carried away. Our voices became scratchy and took on elftones.

After about 4 hours of intensive toy making. …I mean reedmaking, David invited us upstairs for sandwich sandwiches and more stout. Donuts washed down with stout is probably the best thing for you..and …..It’s YUMMY!

David thereafter picked up the Taylor-Esque Style pipes and warmed us up for a mini-pipe-session. These Pipes are currently being auctioned on Ebay and I say they’ll be woth it to the purchaser. The drone and chanter sounded beatiful. I and the others in the room did not detect 20 cents of sharpness. I believe there well in concert pitch.
Each Piper was granted permission to start up a tune so the rest of us could chime in. Some tunes included
Morning Thrush
Buck of Oranmore
Kerry jig/ Ballintore fancy
Jolly Tinker
Frahers
Garden of Daisies
Fermoy lasses

And now the results are; The following awards have been handed down by the Grand Pupa

Best reed ---- Kevin McBride(he hasn’t even started playing pipes yet he made a reed that sounded close)-

Most innovative-Wild Danny McLaughlin

Best Pipes- Taylor Esque

Best tune –Morning Thrush-Brian

Best Elvis impersonation-David Power

Most impressive- Brandon McClatchey ( at two months into the pipes this young lad rattled off the Fermoy Lasses) David Power scolded him for not using the drones or the regulators-will give him another month to pick these up.

Best Umbrian closed finger style- Steve Douglass with no dirt under the finger nails

Gentleman Piper Award- John Donelly(Sorry David you’re a tad wild)

Best Jig- Eamonn Sweeney on Garret Barrys-he made us play it twice which was nice.

Best Disposition-John Sweeney he kept us well grounded.

Most Obnoxious- Phil Mypipes( self deprecating humor stinks)

The evening was followed by a short trip to the Claddagh cottage Pub for some lovely platsy Patsy Irish Music?

Really?

When did Mr. Esque start copying the Taylor brothers?

when do we pick up our grammys phil? :moreevil:

Sounds like you got a nice group started there! But was there subtle mention of an “unreleased” Cd? David Power, maybe?

Yes and Yes, If Claddagh records carries through I believe we will all be pleasantly suprised!

I should also mention that Danny McLaughlin has a CD out. Now, the two styles Danny and David are a world apart but what a joy to listen to both and appreciate them for what they are. Individuality, style and creativity in different directions. There is a market and ear for each style. This is a good thing for piping and I am honored to know these pipers as a friend. I’ll say no more lest I end up falling into a critics trap. :astonished:
Mr. Denman would understand

MyPipes, I don’t want to ask you to make a judgement on the differences in piping styles you refer to, but could you tell us what kind of music is on each CD? Are they both all solo piping? Are they both available from Claddagh?

Thx,

djm

You may contact Danny direct for his CD @ pipedaddy@hotmail.com
You’ll have to wait for David’s as Claddagh Records has it in the works.

I may not necessarily want to contact Danny if I knew in advance that his CD is a C&W band with a bit of UPs on one track.

cool… :sunglasses:

What, no women pipers? You guys need to recruit some girls!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Justine

Well, that’s the “Lonely Hearts” part!

Which begs the question: Has either of the ‘mypipes’ duo taken up learning the pipes??

Your avatar photo is scouling at me so …I’ll be careful. No women pipers were allowed because David’s wife wasnt home and he’s not permitted to have women in the house at such times. BUT it really was not a place for ladies…I mean some of these guys had BO and it was tight quartered!
Notwithstanding that there all male Chauvanists…Next year we’ll put an end to this barbarism and we’ll have dancing girls!!! Im running away now very fast! :really:

Ha, ha! Is my avatar really so intimidating? (If only I looked that way in real life).

Well maybe I will start a Chicks Pipers Club. We could sit around and talk about our feelings or something.

Justine

hahaha…most impressive huh?

well it was all good fun though. although i believe my name was misspelled
-Brendan

I’m sorry, but I’ve just heard something that may well ruin my Christmas. I want to be alone now… :sniffle:

j.i.

So do I… but probably for different reasons :smiling_imp: :moreevil:
by the way I look just like my avatar
