So I’ve ordered an O’Dwyer Lon Dubh whistle from whistle and drum, but it’s been on back order for almost a year. I’m thinking about applying the purchase price to something else unless this whistle is worth the wait. Anyone have some insight to share?

Or were you speaking of the higher end model?
Do you see it in the hands of Micho Russel, Mary Bergin, Paddy Maloney, Liam O’flynn, John Skelton or anyone else? Honestly, as much fun as all these different “luxury” whistles are to trade in, for sound alone I think that whistles styled after Generations are going to be what you’re after. Sindt, Hoover, Humphrey, and now Killarney are in that ballpark. Honestly though, part of the beauty of the whistle comes from the fact that it’s a metal tube with a simple mouthpiece. If you add wood, silver rings, a double-walled tuning slide, and an (admittedly phallic) stylized mouthpiece, I think you’re inevitably going to be disappointed after all that waiting, because it’s ceased to be what an irish whistle is -or was- prior to 1980 or so. I think a lot of the masters see a whistle as the window they experience the tradition through; and thus having as little adornment between one and the music is desirable.
But is it fun to own thirty different whistles by different makers with different sounds and looks and everything else? Hell yes. But a magic bullet to the Irish Trad world it ain’t- simplicity is. It’s just a matter of what you’re after.

Thanks for the link. I read all of it, but didn’t find one real review of this particular whistle, mostly just speculation based on the high-end product and the pic. I still haven’t heard if anyone thinks this is worth the wait.
I think I did give an opinion of the whistle towards the end of the thread, based on handling it and playing it briefly..
It’s a nice enough, easy playing well tuned whistle. I would have considered buying one, maybe, if it had been no more expensive than say, €30. At more than twice that, well, no.

Thanks, Mr.Gumby, you’re right; you did post some impressions. I’ll check out the mini review you linked, too. The thing is it’s been such a long time since I ordered it and no one seems to know what the hold up is, and I’m not really finding glowing reviews…so I think I’d rather transfer the funds to something else and actually have something in hand. Maybe I just need to live with the unfulfilled expectation…
