How do people feel about EthnicWinds.com Tunable Copper Whistle in high D?
I’m in the market for a good, sweet toned instrument to complement our band’s dynamic and my current whistle is to precious to travel! Is the above whistle good? nice? worth the money? PLease help!

The maker’s a pretty good guy. He’ll give a refund
if you don’t like it. I doubt there’s been enough
traffic in them yet to get many opinions. I can say
that visually, the painted whistles are pretty sweet.
But I haven’t tried the high versions.
A while back I bought a low D (I think) from him. I didn’t like it - too airy, too soft, etc. No problem at all with getting a refund. The whistle wasn’t what I was looking for, but that’s not to say someone else wouldn’t love it. I’d say the price is low enough to buy one on spec and return it if you don’t like it - you’ll only be out a bit of shipping bucks.

Thanks guys! If I buy one I’ll post on this forum and give an opinion. The maker does seem like a nice guy (making christian albums) and it’s nice he accecpts returns. I just don’t want to screw him over if I’m too picky!

wide, so I’d like to know what it sounds like.
These whistles have been mentioned here in the past. Nick Metcalf, the maker, has posted here as well. I have not heard/read any reviews on the high D.

I’ve been planning on sending a whistle or two to the wandering whistle guy, but I havebeen pretty swamped with orders, so I haven’t gotten around to it.
BTW, I have recently upgraded my design significantly. I switched from using acrylic in the fipple plug to delrin which was a really nice visual upgrad and also much easier to machine so the sound is actually better than it used to be.
I also have PVC whistles, acrylic bodied whistles, and aluminum whistles besides for the copper ones. Most people who order the acrylic high D say it’s their favorite whistle… I really like that model specificlly in the high D.
Don’t worry about trying out the whistles, if you don’t like them that’s a risk I take, always happier to have a happy customer than to make money. I think out of the more than 1500 whistles I have sold I have maybe had to refund 7 or 8. so it’s really not a big worry of mine.

Alright I have owned my ethnic winds whistle for 1 day now and will give my opinions thus far.
First the dude who owns this company is a good guy so I hope I don’t offend him.
I consider myself a resonably expericenced whistle player on the standard D whistle. I’ve also had a lot of them. This one is a like a clark whistle, just with bigger metal balls 
teehee had to put that in. It has a really pure yet soft/breathyish tone in the lower octave. Once you want to get to the upper range though BOY do you have to muscle it. I’m a flute player with a kick butt embouchure but this whistle still had my jaw aching and lip smarting where my teeth tried to puncture it after 2 test reels. After I got the hang of it I realized this might be a decent session whistle but I will be unable to perform in my band with it. Unfortuntely any note after the octave A is unintelligible. It just doesn’t work up there, or I must not have the lung power or muscle control to get it. I don’t know but I’m frustrated. I need to be able to play Amazing Grace in G an octave up (that means a high, high D folks) and this poor thing just isn’t gonna due it. I don’t know if I’m gonna keep it, I’d feel REALLY bad about being the 9th person ever to return, and the painting is exquisite…I need to contact Nick Metcalf and tell him whats up and see if he has any pointers…
defenitely send it back to me… it’s a bit tricky to know how certain players like them. I didn’t have any problems with the second octave myself, but then I play a million whistles all the time, so I can pretty much make most of em sound decent. I can make you one that has a much easier second octave, all it takes is a slight milemeter movement of the fipple block. So no worries, everyone likes em a certain way, I’ll cover your return shipping and be happy to make one you can use.

I have had my new refurbished whistle back for about a week now. I’m super impressed with it’s new high notes. They are not at all shrill and probably the quietest possible. More quiet than I even thought possible. The 3rd octave D is beautiful. Who would have thought that possible? It also needs hardly any air to support a note, even that 3rd D. It’s not that easy to hit the low D if you’re bumping around fast. I think it will take time and and muscle memory to perfect the perfect air pressure. It’s gonna be worth it though. Oh yeah b/c it’s copper it has the same probs the wandering whistler talks about with clogging. This happens really easy but I don’t mind sucking it out. I’m actually used to this because my fave whistle, burke’s session whistle, has the same problem it’s just not as bad. Since the burke is almost $200 now it better not clog too easily! The ethnic wind whistle is a nice whistle, and really pretty. You get your bang for your buck.
