Guys, I have been working of this page and have put together a relatively comprehensive list of All-Ireland but I am missing out a lot of the older champions - can you help??
I doubt either, not being Comhaltas people specifically, would be interested in listing All Ireland champions Jerry. As I said in another thread: Comhaltas had a team of people try compile a list from the the first fleadh onward, the logical thing would be to contact the organisation although I doubt they will supply what they have as their results only go back to 1996 on their own website. You can see those results here.
A few years ago they had a concert of all Ireland champions in Glor in Ennis, I am not sure they picked all Clare All Ireland winners still alive or that it was a nationwide thing. Some of it was broadcast on Clare FM, as usual musicians were teamed up to save time, some really bad fits emerged, I felt particularly sorry for Joe Ryan who badly struggled with his duet partner’s playing.
We had a Garda Sergeant stationed here a few years ago who took pride from the fact he was placed second on the accordeon in the Munster fleadh some year or other. Someone locally found he was the only entry that year. Ofcourse we couldn’t slag him about it but we had a good laugh. He also tried to stop double parking on the mainstreet. That didn’t take well.
Thanks for that Peter, I have inputted all the people from 1996 onwards that are on the CCE website and some others that I have found around the internet - if you know any others feel free to add or just say it here and I will do it for you, but you are more than welcome to do it yourself - cheers
Nothing ventured nothing gained, Peter. It’s been my experience that more often than not, if someone doesn’t have the information I need, they can offer suggestions where I might find it. Sometimes it takes several steps of this kind of networking to get the result.
True Jerry, but really, working (and not only working ofcourse) people have better things to do than being bothered with questions about silly things like this. It one of the curses of the internet and personally I don’t like to assume that people will do your work for you just because you know their names and e-mail address. Especially as vintage kits apparently failed going to the most obvious source of information in the first place despite the repeated suggestion to look into Comhaltas based sources made to him here and on other forums and refrained from trying until I spelled out the link to the appropriate page of results in the post above.
I get a lot of that stuff, from ‘Hi I am a student from the US working on an assignment and I need to find out the population of Miltown Malbay. I see you live there, can you help me please?’ ‘I see you play the Uilaen pipes [sic] can you please explain how they work?’ to ‘Dear Sir, I will be attending the Willie Clancy Summer School this year, can you find and book me a cheap B&B?’ ‘I am going to spend three months in Ireland, can you please tell me what sort of weather it is during the summer so I know what clothes to pack?’ these are questions received by e-mail from total strangers, none were made up
Now, I am always willing to help people with a genuine thought through question but if they are just too fecking lazy to get off their arses and do their own work and instead throw the question out to the first person who’s e-mail address they find I usually reply there are appropriate websites or reference books to look at first. So what I am saying, I really I think some thorough groundwork is in order before bothering other more or less randomly selected people.
Thats actually not true Peter, I already had all the winners listed on the CCE website but they only start at 1996. I am just doing this as I thought it would be a good source for people to have in the future - its not like I am getting paid for it - so you can take your attitude elsewhere!
I just thought some people on here might have competed in the old (pre-96) years a remember how won!

Wikipedia isn’t someone’s ninth grade homework assignment.
Because Wikipedia has such an enormous readership/participation, it might be a vehicle for filling in many of the listings that have been missing. You might be able to create a broadbased, collaborative effort to retrieve that information for posterity. The people I mentioned at RTE Radio one might be able to assist you by helping to get the word out and suggesting other potential participants you might connect with.
