Hi! Are the liner notes for the “Fluters of Old Erin” compilation available anywhere? Would anyone who has them be willing to scan or photo them? If so it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Now if someone just had a live download link… (Or a sanely-priced sale link.)
… or are all these recordings in one of the online 78 archives?
I’d also be interested in some additional info than what is on the website colomon kindly listed. Does anyone have contact info for Harry Bradshaw ? (Probably best to either PM or email.) Is he still among us (question out of ignorance as I don’t know the gentleman)?
Thanks and best wishes.
Steve
The Comholtas Archive has the complete compilation here as “Untitled Tape T505”. Some of the tracks are listed under alternative names.
I don’t think you’re “allowed” to download them, but you can quite easily.
And the files are a higher kbps than the ones previously offered on Ceol Álainn. coughwinkcough
I read some excerpts from the liner notes in Grey Larsen’s book, and it looks like they have some interesting biographical information on the musicians. I’d mostly like to know the specific year each track was originally recorded.
EDIT: Oh, and the “John McKenna: His Original Recordings” compilation is also there as “Untitled Tape T504”. I already found the years recorded here. I’d like to read the liner notes to that too, if there are any.
To “Awol” - I have the McKenna tape. If you send me a PM with an address of some sort - e- or postal - I’ll scan the notes and send you a copy.
Was that compilation issued on anything other than cassette published on Viva Voce? I have a copy of the cassette liner notes and there’s no biographical information, just the track listings and the dates of the original recordings.
Nope, cassette only.
I’d greatly appreciate the information on dates of the original recordings, if that’s a simple task.
In Grey Larsen’s “Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle” he transcribes a couple of tunes from “Fluters of Old Erin.” In the description of a tune by William Cummins (p. 372) he says, “According to Harry Bradshaw’s liner notes to “Fluters of Old Erin” …[and goes on to provide a brief bio of Mr. Cummins, his flute playing and his other recordings].” So it seems like Mr. Larsen had a copy of the cassette that had some additional descriptive materials. Maybe the liner notes changed with various issuances of the cassette?
Probably the best thing would be to contact Mr. Larsen directly…[Edit: Just sent an email. I’ll report on any response. S.B.]
Thanks and best wishes.

Got a lightning fast response from Mr. Larsen that said, “I picked up a copy of this cassette in Ireland in the 70s, and the insert has 14 panels including the liner notes in question.” He offered to send copies of the material. So, mystery solved and source material will be available soon—Thanks very much to Grey Larsen…
Best wishes.
Steve
good boy!

Harper (my avatar) particularly appreciates your gesture…
Best wishes.
Steve
Thanks for the offer! Another forum member’s already sent me a PDF though.
I assume it’s ok to share? What’s the best place to upload it? This forum doesn’t seem to have an attachment feature.
nope, ya gotta find a home on the web for it and then you can point at it here
I don’t think that I’ve mentioned to Cass (my avatar) that I’ve used her…
might be best…cranky thing when she isn’t going too fast around a corner.
The liner notes to “Fluters of Old Erin” are here.
Now does anyone know if “John McKenna: His Original Recordings” had any? ![]()
Kenny has kindly send a copy of the liner notes to John McKenna. I’ll email those to you for potential posting also.
Best wishes.
Steve
Oops! I misread! I meant someone else had sent me the “Fluters of Old Erin” notes. And Steve’s just sent me the McKenna notes you sent him. So:
- Here are the notes to “Fluters of Old Erin”.
- Here are the notes to “John McKenna: His Original Recordings”.
Thanks to all involved! ![]()
Michael sent me another clearer version of the “Fluters of Old Erin” notes and I’ve edited the links in my previous posts to include it.
I wonder if a mod could change the title of this thread to be something like: Liner notes to “Fluters of Old Erin” and “John McKenna” compilations
The liner notes to “Fluters…” suggests that there would be a second volume.
Does anyone know if there ever was a second cassette issued?
Is Harry Bradshaw still working on this sort of project?
Thanks and best wishes.
Steve
That’s brilliant guys, thanks of the notes.
Steve - maybe you could refer to this discussion in your John McKenna discussion (https://forums.chiffandfipple.com/t/john-mckenna/80381/1) . Google found it for me last week when searching for McKenna and I was going to bump it with the information that the Comhaltas archive seemed to have the recordings once I had registered there to hear the full length.

EDIT: I have put into that discussion a list of John McKenna recordings that are in the Comhaltas archive but are not on the cassette mentioned.
