List of All Ireland Champions

Guys, I have been working of this page and have put together a relatively comprehensive list of All-Ireland but I am missing out a lot of the older champions - can you help??

cheers

There’s a gaping hole in your list…Where is MICHAEL FLATLEY?!

:stuck_out_tongue:

Flatley never won the All-Ireland Senior - he won at the 16-18 level, either in 1975 or possibly 1976, I believe. He was placed in the Senior in 1977, so by Comhaltas’ curious logic that the 1st 3 places are “All_Ireland Champions”, the description is accurate.

Interesting that the predominace of whistle champions are female.

Those sixties flute finals with paddy carty, Cathall McConnell Seamus Tansey and Matt Malloy battling it out must have been a sight to hear,

It’s a shame they weren’t all recorded. A site like this with mp3s of all the winning performances would be stellar.

Hmmm… are you the same person as BeaumontProject, then?

Just curious.

Do you know any of the years they won?

The years they won are on the list. We don’t actually know if they ever competed against each other.
and Patsy HANLY deserves to have his name spelt correctly.

Does he ever!

(FWIW, I’ve typed “Hanley” more than a few times meself)

Turlach Boylan won Slow Airs on Flute in 1986, maybe as a 15-18 year-old? Or are you only doing seniors?

Tommy Martin won 15-18 Uilleann Pipes in 1988, and the senior Uilleann competition in 1991

this from a thread we had 3 years ago:

All-Ireland Senior Flute Champions
…well no need…i see you have them

and Lawrence Nugent won the whistle in 1993 (or maybe 92)…
I competed against him that year on flute.

Yeah, doing a list of the seniors only.

I got all the flute players, but not all the slow air flute players. Thanks for your help so far!

see the change above…adding Nugent

I’ve gone ahead and fixed that one for the original poster. I saw that the info, including typo, was copied from the Irish Echo.

Kevin Krell

Thanks Kevin, I sent the guy at the Echo an email to see where he got his info - but the email bounced back - maybe he doesnt work there anymore

Larry Nugent certainly won Senior whistle in Clonmel in 1994, and came third in the flute.

you sure?, I pretty much remember he was drunk for most of the week!! In fact I remember Sean MacMathuna dragging him off a stage half way through his second tune because he was unable to play - feckin hilarious! great lad, great laugh

I don’t think we’re talking about the same competition. I’m talking about the All-Ireland Senior whistle competition which took place in 1994 in Clonmel. The competition took place in a school classroom. There was no stage, and nobody hauled him off. I still have a recording of the whole competition, so, yeah, I am sure. I also heard him in the flute competition.

I don’t know Nugent or anything about him.

I know a lot of Irish musicians who are raving alcoholics. It’s really hilarious to see them unable to play, loose their instruments or fall off their chair in mid tune. Fecking hilarious, great craic!

nugent has 3 recordings out there (all very good).

Larry’s a character, no doubt. I met him at the Fleadh here in the US back ~1993 or 94 (it was in St. Louis).
We competed on flute and whistle and had great fun.

That he won the whistle that year in Clonmel (it was indeed Clonmel) made me feel good that I lost to him. Lost to him on flute by a point. That’s a whole different story worthy of a few drinks.

I took flute the following year in Cleveland, but didn’t get to travel to Listowel for the All-Ireland…no money.

Ah well. Not like a fellow with a last name like mine would have stood a chance anyway.
