I saw a couple of radio stations’ URLs mentioned in Peter Laban’s thread and I was wondering if there are good irish trad/celtic (I’m not narrowminded) webcasts out there that people could recommend.
I’ve listened to Celtic Grooves (see links page) quite a bit already, but it gets tedious: Tannahill Weavers, Celt-Rock, Highland pipes & drums, with the odd Altan tune thrown in. (I don’t mind the 'Weavers—in moderation, that is—and I certainly don’t mind Altan…)
The Irish stations I’ve found are basically pop charts with Belfast traffic info (and I’d prefer to listen to the latter…).
Clare Fm has a trad program every night 7-9 local time and saturdays a live broadcast 7-8
RTE has a good few programs and a lot of music can be accessed through their archive (via rte.ie, you’ll have find the exact location yourself as I don’t use this service)
This is a weekly, hour long program run by Tommy Murphy from Mayo. The new shows are posted on Fridays and can be downloaded anytime in RealRadio format. They usually keep a month of shows on the web site so you can go back if you like.
His program is half requests (which you submit by email the week before)and half theme driven. One week he does only requests and the next some theme - like cieli band music.
It’s a little heavy on balads for my taste, but has enough variety that I enjoy it.
Try http://www.wgbh.org and you will find links to their weekly radio show Celtic Sojourn and you can play past programs. The show often features new releases and sometimes will have interviews of any artist who might be visiting the Boston area.
The Ceolnet radio station by RTE is one of the better celtic music radio stations IMHO. It has some great recordings from way back (40’s, 50’s, 60’s) and you can also select by artist, group etc if you like.
Take a look at Live365.com. Under the “Irish” genre they currently have 88 stations listed that play at least some Irish music. They have a wide variety of music from Irish trad, to New Age, to Celt Rock, so you should be able to find something that appeals to you. However, one of my favorite staions that Live365.com has is not listed in the Irish genre. A station called “Hibernia Obscura Caladenia Obscura” specializes in old 78 rpm record Celtic classics. Type in Hibernia in their search box and you will come to it.
