I’d like to know if there’s anywhere in the UK that’s good to buy whistles from. I bought half the whistles in my local music shop - so I bought 2.
I can search the board for advice on what to get - that’s no problem.

If you don’t already have one, get one of Tony Dixon’s whistles!

Hi,
Try Phil Brown at http://www.bigwhistle.co.uk Good selection of whistles, tune books etc. Good service as well.
Cheers, Mac
I second Bretton’s suggestion. Dixon whistles are reliable and reasonably priced, and it’s always a pleasure to deal with Tony.
I third(?)Bretton’s idea-Tony’s whistles are great value, good players(I have a low ‘F’)and he REALLY is a nice guy to do business with.Later,if the dreaded WHOA takes hold, you may wish to contact Fred Rose(see high end whistle section)or Bernard Overton,or John Swayne, not forgetting Brian Howard(low D and C whistles- widely available in music shops)and Phil Bleazey. These are the English Whistlesmiths that come to mind. Also ALBA whistles from Scotland.Hopefully,I’ve missed no-one out.The choice is really yours, dependant upon your preferences and price.Check the ‘Chiff’ guides.Good whistle hunting! ![]()
You won’t go wrong with Phil Brown. His prices and service are better than most.
Hi from the lakes,
If your after the cheaper end whistles gens, fea’s etc the prices of all the suppliers are much of a much. If you are going for a high end I’d recomend you go direct to the whistlesmith themselves.
cheers Richard.
If you just want to browse through a range of whistles, visit a Hobgoblins shop (check out their website for locations, which off the top of my head are Bristol, Bradford, Crawley, central London).
Hi Taxman,
I second Nickt’s Hobgoblin suggestion - that’s where I got most of my whistle and other trad music stuff. They have a goodly range of music books & CDs too.
Shanna Quay in Ireland have a large selection of CDs, friendly & prompt service, and not too expensive to get sent over to the UK.
And yes, Tony Dixon’s whistles are good, especially his lows being much cheaper than most other choices, and quiet enough not to rouse the neighbour’s wrath. You could do worse than visit his site, or give him a ring to tell him what you have in mind - he’s a very helpful chap too.
happy hunting!
