Where can I buy whistles in London?

I have recently moved to London from Darwin, Australia and want to supplement my whistle collection. Can anyone recommend somewhere to go, as the prospect of searching this city is a bit daunting.

Hobgoblin is your best bet, IMO. Check it out.

Hi Aziraphale and welcome to C&F,

As Jens said, Hobgoblin is your best bet. Go to Tottenham Court Road tube station (Central line currently out so you’ll have to use the Northern), head west along Oxford Street, and turn right up the second sideroad on your right (i.e. heading north). It’s about a hundred yards up on the right.

Hobgoblin have an excellent selection of cheap & expensive whistles, flutes, and other traditional instruments, and friendly & knowledgeable staff.

You could also, from the same station, head south down Charing Cross Road to Macari’s. It’s on a corner past all the bookshops. The have a fair selection too, though not as quite comprehensive as Hobgoblin. Along that road and on sideroads off it there are a number of specialist music stores, guitar shops, keyboard shops etc, but they don’t usually carry whistles.

If you carry on south down Charing Cross Road you’ll soon come to Leicester Square tube station, on the Picadilly Line.

Most other local music stores out of the centre of London will probably only carry Generations.

If you’re into Irish Traditional Music, there’s an excellent session near Covent Garden, at The Porterhouse, every Sunday from about 5pm on. They’re too good for me yet, but new players are always welcome.

All the best!

Thanks for the reminder about the Porterhouse Martin, I’m going to get there one day before I head back to Oz…

By the way, the whistle makes I’ve seen stocked in Hobgobin -

Cheapies >£5 for a D: Clarke (original & sweetone), Generation (all keys), Walton (normal, Mellow D, LBW & Guiness)

Mid-range >£5<£20 : Susato, Dixon, Nabi (bamboo), Shaw

Pricey> £50: Overton, Chieftain, Alba, Harper, Sweet (wood) , Alder (wood)

Low Whistles: Howard (low), Overton, Chieftain, Kerry, Alba

They also have a great collection of CDs and tunebooks/tutors.

Excellent! Thanks guys - knew I could count on fellow C&Fers.

I remember an angel named Aziraphale features prominently in the comic novel of the apocalypse by Neil Gaiman and someone else called “Good Omens.” What a hilarious character that was. Is that where you got your screen name? If so, that’s very cool!
