If all you want for Christmas is an Overton Bb...

I’ve got one for sale. I’ve had it for only a week or so, but while it’s a fabulous whistle, it’s not quite right for me. I’m the second owner, and it’s in great condition with certificate of authenticity.
$90 covers shipping and insurance; the whistle is extra (just kidding).
Please email if interested.

[Thanks to dth for clever subject line.]

drool drool.

Oh, don’t be so rational, Bloom.
It’s only a dollar a day for the next 3 months…

Must resist…
Need money for flight to Mexico…

Most Mexican tunes are in Bb, aren’t they?

Micah - you do have a good point here… hmmm…

Chris,
Now I can’t tell who’s being fecitious! Are a lot of Mexican tunes in Bb for real?

Micah -
Yes, traditionally, most Mexican music is played in Bb. People were having difficulty remembering in which key to play so they decided to use a key that corrsponded with the first letter in the names of many things traditional association with Mexico - burro, bandito, burrito, Baja, and Baryshnikov being among some of the most familiar. They all start with B and lest anyone forget they decided to remind them by adding the small b as a flat symbol. B b … bandito, burrito, burro, Baja, Baryshnikov… it couldn’t be easier.
So next time you are in Mexico and don’t know what whistle to reach for, reach for your Baryshnikov.

Chris

Enlightening. But Spanish speakers don’t call Bb Bb, they call it whatever that note is called on the do re mi scale, which means that Russian ballet dancers aren’t deeply involved in Mexican music.
All the same, I’ll swap you for the Sindt your getting…

Micah -
You make a good point. However, your point assumes that I am referring to the general Spanish speaking population. In reality, I was referring to the native Tzotzil living in the area around San Cristobal in the Chiapas region, who, of course, speak their own language derived from Mayan.

Chris

I can only hope that some of them read C&F…perhaps one of them will buy my Overton.

Sorry Chris, even in Quechua it would be do re mi scale. Unless you are a “La Bamba” playing harpist from Vera Cruz. Then it is the 15th string on the left.

Andean whistler

P.S. I had much the same reaction as Bloomfield. Thankfully Chris distracted me.

I’ll be there in 2 months. Perhaps you could send the Overton with me and I’ll do my best to sell it.
Hmm… 90 dollars is equal to 912 pesos. If the average Tzotzil earns 30 pesos a day (just a rough figure) that means one of them could pay for the whistle in 30 days… perhaps you could offer some sort of payment plan? 4 easy monthly installments of 228 pesos each, with a free bonus gift, perhaps?

Best,
Chris

P.S. - How’s this for keeping the thread on top? You can send me my commission via Paypal at christopherlaughlin@hotmail.com

Doh! Mark - why’d ya have to blow my cover. I was doing such a good job!
Chris

I might take it! it’s in good condition, plays well and all…
I live in Switzerland…

Hmm. Arhhmmm. Blurdy Gauloises.

Sorry to rudely barge in as usual, folks, but Russians in a wide sense (i.e. also Bielaruss, Ukrainians, and a few others) also go with a Doh-Ray-Mee-Fa-Soil’-Lya-See-Doh scale, just like 'em–arrhhhummm–Frenchmen with their terrible accent, what ? or Italians, period.

Which definitely proves them Barryshinikov, B-flat-ach, Borr O’Dine, Berly O’Zee, Bawler O’Ravel and surprisingly Paddy O’Carolan DID study in Tee-Jay music Academy at some point, and should be considered honoris causa members of Baja Mariachi Bband.

Dr ZuBb

Stay tuned and ya’ll learn why pelicans art the only mammals with a ventral pouch under the Beak, just as kanguroos. Rats. I mean, wallabies.

Chris,
You’re right, I should be sending you a commission for your admirable job of keeping this thread at the top.
If I’m ever in your neighborhood, I’ll buy you a pint.
The whistle (what whistle? oh, the one that started this thread) is under purchase agreement, by the way. Bloom, you can wipe the drool from your chin.
Micah

Excellent… soon the mothership will arrive and the invasion will commence. You puny Earthlings stand little chance against the combined might of the ((RUC(F#(Y(crys&#* 3FD8b#eople (&%)#$&%)#G(&(#%Bus%# &#(%GRE#^&^TAN(&$(($

It’s what you get for being Swiss, Amar, just like 400 years of neutrality and cookoo clocks.

Micah, thanks for not tempting me further. I’ve got two O’s coming and, you know.
