I see that the seller also has a very similar looking ‘A’ whistle for sale.Although I haven’t actually seen one ‘in the flesh’,these look like the Indian made ‘Asaker’ whistles to me.Any ‘Asaker’ owners care to comment/confirm my suggestion?

I had a set of these whistles a year or so ago. They were fun enough to play around with but the tuning was horrible. I eventually gave them all away. Do a search for ‘asarkar’ and you’ll get all the info you need.

The picture’s even worse than usual, but it does seem to be one of the Indian (Pakistani?) cheapies. A lot of them change hands on eBay though I’ve never seen them sold anywhere else.

Cheers Frank,
I thought my spelling might be a bit awry!-I should have done a check before posting.

Song of the Sea sells these, too, I believe.

I played the low D. Not bad, not great. It is worth paying a little more for a better whistle, though it is also kind of neat to see cheapie low whistles, even if they are less pleasant to play than many cheapie high whistles.

Ok. That all makes sense. I used to have one of these in a low D, and the bottom few notes were very touchy and unstable, like playing a bass recorder (which is terribly difficult). Also scale degrees 3 and 4 (F# and G) were alarmingly out of tune. Difficult stretch as well. On the positive side, it was cheap, and had a certain charm in its breathy tone, and maybe some guy in India fed his family for a day because I bought it.
