How big is your flute?

Hi. I’m attempting to get an idea of the average size of flutes and their parts. I would like to ask you nice people, if you could, tell me the key your flute is in, what kind of foot (if any) it has, how many parts it breaks down to, how long and how big around those parts are, and if it has keys

Thank you very much in advance

Plenny big!

Now remember, it’s not the size of your flute that counts, it’s how you play it.

Copley, D flute, four parts with a standard C foot with open holes, i.e. no keys. No measuring tape handy, sorry.

Hi Lark,
The flute I just built, is a RS Pratten.
The head joint/ barrel is 250 mm
the middle section is 270 mm not counting the tenons
the foot is 135 mm
It has no keys.
The inner diameter is from 19 mm to 14 mm.
Hope this helps.

You might want to see Terry Mcgees site on “bores I have none”

I’m playing a Chris Wilkes blackwood keyless in the key of D. It has a C foot and breaks down into four parts. It is a big beautiful flute capable of a powerful sound. I’m learning how to drive it - great craic

I thought I’d be clever when my wife asked me to give her a new password, when she bought a new computer…

So, being so smart…I wrote P_E_N_I_%…well you get it. But she broke down laughing, and I was perplexed…

She showed me that an error message was displayed “Sorry password rejected, not long enough.”

So much for the length of my flute!

You’ll have to ask my wife that question.

Lark, you asked this question on PURPOSE to make me take out my flute and put it together! When I haven’t played the poor thing for months! Sneaky!

Ormiston 5 piece keyless, C foot, 26 and a quarter inches. I can’t believe my tape measure doesn’t have metric on it…

oops, forgot the piece measurements…

head joint with tuning slide 8 and 1/8"
second piece 2 and 3/4" (this is the tuning slide chamber)
third piece 8 and 1/4" (first 3 finger holes)
fourth piece 6" (last 3 finger holes)
foot joint 5 and 5/8"

Casey Burns Beginners/Folk flute:

Head Joint: 9 3/8" (to heck with metric)
Foot Joint: 13 1/2"

It’s big enough to keep ME happy.

Ya size queen. :stuck_out_tongue:

Roughly:

  • Extended footjoint 5"15/16" (sorry, no metric rule available)
  • Lower body joint 5" from socket to tenon end, 3"1/2" profile
  • Upper body joint 7"3/16" tenon to tenon, about 6"7/8" profile
  • Barrel 2"13/16"
  • Headjoint 7"7/16" from socket to end of tuning slide, 5"7/16" profile
  • Endcap 1" from end to tenon end, 9/16" profile
  • Fully assembled, approx. 26" from endcap to foot, tuning slide undeployed.

M&E RR polymer 6 key. I think I got it all right enough. Probably the most disassembly it’s seen in forever.
