Hoover Whistle Characteristics

I currently own two of mack Hoover’s whistles D’s. For you all that know me, you guessed it, both are brass. One is a narrow bore two piece and the other is a regular bore one piece. They are both beautiful hancrafted, signed & numbered whistles.

Now I know by experience and knowledge gained from readings on this forum that narow bores are quiet compared to a regular bore, but in the case of both of these, they are both quiet and if you try pushing more air to bet that louder sound, well you sacrifice sound quality (crackles and pushing to higher octives).

To get either whistle to sound correct, I have to barely push air, which is difficult for me since I usually play Lows.

Anyone else out there have this same experience with these instruments?

That’s how Hoovers are…quietlyish.

If you so wanted, I’m sure Mack could make you a loud whistle, though.

I like to play Generation Bb then the Hoover, and I feel like I have more lung power afterwards because I’m used to the bigger whistle which takes more air.

They are called Hoovers because they operate on a vacuum system. You have to suck, not blow.

I have a Hoover brass, regular bore, two piece. Indeed, it is on the quiet side. It is also the sweetest (non-shrill) and most pure sounding high D I own. This is my very favorite practice whistle.

I also have two of Mack’s high D Whitecaps, one on a Mack made tube and one on an old Feadog tube. These, to my ear, are a little bit louder and a tiny bit less sweet. I also can’t hear any differance between the Mack made tube and the old Feadog tube. Both are terrific whistles.

I suggest that if you want louder, ask Mack. I’m sure he will make it for you.

As for me, even though Mack has become well known for his magic Whitecaps, I am thinking of getting some more of his very sweet tunable brass whistles in lower keys.

quietyish = quietish

But I didn’t mean to say quietish. I meant quietlyish. Quietlyish is like fantabuliscious. Just a slightly different shade of meaning.

I need to learn to pay attention to detail.Thank you for the clarifidation :slight_smile:

Did you mean to say “clarifidulation”?

Ya! Dats da woid!

Orxblai.

Or maybe clarifuddlation?
