Bb Hoover-- does not suck!

(note that the subject line was merely a lame vacuum cleaner joke, and not to suggest that any Hoover whistles DO suck)

Just got a pretty Bb whistle from Mack, with a nifty Corian fipple plug ( greenish). The workmanship is very beautiful, and the whistle plays very sweetly. At first, I blew into it like I would into one of my own whistles, and immediatly overblew the heck out of it. Once I got the hang of blowing it softly, it was a real pleasure to play. This is a nice, quiet whistle, not good for a session, but terrific for playing solo, especially if other people in the house are sleeping ( which is often the case around here…). I asked Mack about this, and he told me that he does indeed make session-loud whistles but he is better known for these quiet ones. Mack is a really nice guy to deal with also-- check 'em out.

Hear, hear. The only complaint I have about my Hoovers is that all of them tend to clog, probably because of the low breath requirements. Or maybe I’m just unusually well hydrated.

They all look and sound beautiful, though, and you would search long and hard without finding a nicer guy or a more consciencious craftsman.

WyoBadger…have you tried a Whitecap? Mine never seems to clog…real sweet whistle, too.

Paul…those changing breath requirements can really get you, can’t they? I was playing my Busman yesterday (Shepherd’s Hey, most of which is in the second octave) and decided I wanted to hear how the tune sounded on my newer Susato. Without thinking, I took a nice, deep, well-supported breath and…YIKES! Did you know it is actually possible to hit a third octave F# on a Susato? I didn’t! Guess I learned something new! The cat dove under the sofa, my nearly deaf dog gave me an affronted look, and my husband called down “was that the smoke alarm?”

Ah, whistles…they’re all such individuals, aren’t they? Like little children (only more in tune  )

I second the Whitecap suggestion. My other Hoovers clog (though not enough to stop me from playing them!); the Whitecap does not. When I move to whistles in other keys, I only want to get one type – Whitecaps may be the ones – haven’t had it quite long enough to tell.

I have some Hoover whitecaps which are wonderful, and sound like wood to me. They are willing to be pushed a bit, but don’t require a huge amount of air. They don’t clog at all. I think they are really amazing for the price.

I only have one whitecap (the legendary ski pole low G) and you’re right, it doesn’t clog. Sounds beautiful, too.
