Anyone had any experience with the Brass soprano D?
I have a brass narrow bore D. It’s super quiet. Sweet. Low breath requirements. Requires above average breath control. Clogs easily (there are remedies). My sample needs OXXOXX for Cnat to be in tune. Nicely made. Nice looking. If I were buying another, I’d go with a larger bore.
Yes. I’ve had the regular bore brass, the narrow bore brass, and a bazillion whitecaps.
Mack is an awesome trustworthy man. One time I had a freak accident and broke one of my whistles (long story). It was no fault of Mack’s at all, but he found out and send me another one. That’s the kind of character he has. A superb whistlemaker and friend.
As far as the actual whistle itself, I agree with all that FJohnSharp says.
Just a note to point out that not all Mack’s whistles are quiet.
If you want a session-capable whistle, he can make you one of those as well.. I have one he made about two years ago, a whitecap on one of his own tubes, and it is superb, very sweetly voiced, with volume about equal to my Burke AlPro session D.

For years, I owned a brass, tunable, standard-bore Hoover D. For sweetness of sound, it was king. Someone who had very few whistles desired the whistle, and I, who had more, complied. I miss it, and will ask Mack to make me another, in the future…
On a personal note, Mack is simply one of the most stand-up persons I have met in my long existence. He is special.

I love mine, it’s perfect for those bad asthma days…yeah, Mack is one of those special people…
Anna, I miss you!!
I’m back but no promises about sticking around forever, we all come and go…(hugs!)
He sure is a stand-up guy. I email him nearly every day, and he never even put a block.
im up to 6 of his whistles at last count .i have the brass standard and narrow bore soprano d 's and i’ve a slight prefference for the narrow bore i dont find much difference in volume between the two but the narrow bore takes less breath and sounds a little clearer i highly recomend any of his whistles ps the pvc are really great too
I have a traditional bore, tuneable brass Hoover D (Number 1098). I have owned it for several years now. It may be my favorite practice whistle.
It is beautifully made and, while it may be a tad quieter than some of my other whistles, it playes beautifully and sweetly (not shrilly) all the way through the second octave. So if you gotta play Danny Boy, (as discused elsewhere) and need to hit and hold that second octave B or, even Ashokan Farewell with that second octave C natural, this is the one in my humble opinion.
Did I mention that it’s beautifully made? ![]()
Mack is also a true gentleman.
That’s one of my favorite things about Mack’s whistles, the way each individual piece of art (and they are pieces of art) is numbered so. ![]()
Anyone have any experience with a Hoover brass low G?
I just (today) recieved a Whitecap which I put on a Feadog body. Very, very nice playing and sounding whistle. Takes a little adjusting to after playing to a Clarke original.
The Whitecap has a pure sound, are the brass whistles any chiffier?
Doug
I’m curious, too. What’s that low G whistle like?
