The Hoover Soprano D arrived today! I named it Bijou because it’s like a “little jewel”. I am going to take it down to a trophy shop and have it’s name engraved. Do you get the idea I love this thing! I can’t believe the range it has also. This I will enjoy for years to come. I do need to learn NOT to breath for D. It jumps octave’s fast. I’ll get the hang of it soon. Now I can practice as much as I want.
Many of you recommended
Hoovers and I thank you all for the lead. For a newby, this is a great way to “step up”.
Hoovers don’t suck.
(I was the first to say it this time! w00t!)
I agree with you 100% norm! I recently had a whitecap and a narrowbore D whistle. They are both OUTSTANDING!!!
Mack for President in 04 !!!1
Now I’m thinking about a Whitecap too. ![]()
I just ordered a whitecap brass d from Mack! I am counting the days until it arrives! Finally I will be able to practice without worrying about complaints from the neighbors. (yes, they can scream and yell at each other all day, but when I want to play whistle…you get the picture)
Congrats on your Hoover Norm!

They are lovely, aren’t they? I like the name you gave yours. I have a Whitecap named Mara.
Enjoy!

I have a narrow-bore D. I’m still always surprised how evenly it plays in the 2nd octave with regard to volume.
I have a Whitecap on an old Feadog high D body and it is also an amazing whistle.
Afew weeks ago, I took delivery of a Whitecap aluminum bodied A tenor whistle. Wowzer! It sounds just beautiful. These are now my two favorite whistles. I have more Hoovers coming! Hope to have my hands on a Whitecap low D soon.
I think Mack provides incredible whistles for the price.
Norm, is yours the whitecap design or the all brass narrow bore?
And I have to tell you guys - if you think Mack’s whistles are awesome…you should try his darling wife’s French toast!! Joan - YOU ROCK! ![]()
B~
P.S. Mack, think we could start including a free slice of French toast with every whistle purchased?? LOL
AMEN to that - amazing french toast!!! And some of the sweetest fellowship either side of the Mississippi!

The whitecaps are louder than the brass whistles. I measured the average level while playing the same tune with a noise dosimeter and posted the results here. The whitecap was approximately the same volume as my Oak.

The Hoover I just purchased is the all brass Soprano D. It’s going to take me awhile to play it, but man, when you hit the note…wow! I just returned from my 1st. live session at the Black Sheep Pub here in Ashland. My foot hurts from all the stomping. These guys/gals we’re bringing the walls down! The whole house was jumping. Even some Celtic dancing was going on. There were about 12 players of every kind of instrument that you could think of. I watched as customers were walking in and no one got past the front door without them immediately starting to dance to the rhythms. What a blast! Fish & Chips, Dark Ale and the best music you could want. I didn’t want to come home. They do this every Sunday from 2P.M. to 5P.M. They sit and chat and laugh n’ giggle, then someone starts a lick on a whistle or fiddle and it’s “Katy bar the door!” I’m one lucky guy to have all this so close to where I live. If any of you are lucky enough to come to the Shakespeare Festival held every summer here in Ashland Oregon, you have to drop into this place too!

I told Mack what I was looking for and he said that he was now making an extra quiet whitecap. I’ll keep you posted on how it sounds and it’s volume level. I also have an Oak so I will be able to compare the two whistles. Can’t wait!!!

Got my extra quiet whitecap from Mack a while ago, but wanted to play it for a bit before commenting. It is truly a beautiful whistle. Pure and quiet tone through both octaves (both full octaves). ![]()
The first octave d took a little practice for proper breath control, but it didn’t take long to master. Now my neighbors can yell at each other in peace. ![]()
Set against my Oak whistle in volume, although I don’t have a machine to rate decibals, I would guess the quiet hoover whitecap to be at about half the volume of the Oak.
I would definately recommend this whistle for anyone living in an apartment!

Wow. Extra quite. I bet that thing takes negative air to play. It takes the least amount of air of anything I have right now. Anyone know if his larger whistles are the same? Do the low whistles take an extraordinarily small amount of air too? Oh, and yes I love them too. Pretty much sticking to the whitecap and tweaked gen the last few days.
I have a whitecap head on Generation body. It’s very quiet, or rather, i has the potential to be played very quietly. It didn’t seem quiet to me at first, but you really have to learn how to play these Hoovers, using as little air as possible. Then they sing, beautifully.[/i]
