Heard this on LiveIreland just now and snagged most of it via Goldwave but I missed the first part, as well as the announcement of what CD it’s on. I think they said Altan’s Blackwater…
Could anyone either point me at the correct CD/track and/or supply me with a new MP3 in the meantime (till I buy the CD)? Otherwise I’ll be learning it minus the first A part. And they played it nice and slow, too!
Just quickly listened to all 12 Altan albums and didn’t find the tune on any of them. The whistle playing sounds too bright and cheery to match any on their recordings…I think. I could be wrong because it’s only 4 in the morning…

Naturally I caught the second half of this tune AGAIN last night on live ireland. The announcer afterward said it was the first track of “Altans Black water side” - at least that’s what it sounded like he said. Maybe he was talking about a different tune, he played a few in a row. Whatever it is, it’s on the current looped liveireland feed, so maybe I’ll get lucky and catch the rest of it at some point. Might have to leave Goldwave recording tonight…

There is a tune by Altan called “Blackwaterside,” on the Blackwater CD. It is a song, though, and though it has some nice whistle playing in it, it is just as a backing for the vocals.
The only jigs on Blackwater are track 1 (Johnny Boyle’s / King of the Pipers) and track 12 (A Tune for Frankie). I don’t believe whistle playing occurs in either.
I wish I could help you more; I am not certain what artist you have there, but it is certainly nicely played. It doesn’t sound like Altan–it does sound like Danu a bit though–I wonder if it could be one of their latest?
