Ok, I’ve got just a snippet of tune stuck in my head, and it’s driving me a bit crazier than I already was.
Somewhere, I have a recording of this, I think played on whistle. I can’t find it. It’s a jig, maybe D major or G major, and I know that this figure occurs in the B part: g3 gfg | a2 g d2. I believe there was a long roll on the g3.
That little snippet just keeps playing over and over in my head until it’s finally set my teeth on edge. Maybe if I can find the tune and play it, it’ll get my brain unstuck.
Can anyone provide insight on what tune this might be? I know I’ve not given you a lot to work with.
Thanks,
–James
I’m hearing Christy Barry’s #1:

At my local sessions we typically follow it with - what else? - Christy Barry’s #2:

That’s it! Thank you so much!
That also let me track down what album I have it on: Kevin Crawford’s D Flute Album, where he plays it on whistle.
That thing was stuck between my ears sideways. Aaarrrgggh!

The B section’s pretty distinctive, isn’t it.
That set of Crawford’s is such a classic that it almost seems a shame to not play it intact.
That whole album is just wonderful. I have it in my car and listen to it when I’m driving…much much better than the drek on the radio these days.

Oddly enough that’s an album I don’t have, and I should.
Still, that set and I go back to my beginnings at ITM. I first heard the track - it was Crawford’s same one - on a compilation CD of whistle/flute ITM music that I bought when I was just starting to take up the music but didn’t know jack, or other ITM musicians, and was unsure of where to turn for source material. Fortunately I lucked out with that purchase, for I could sense that even if every track didn’t grab me, on the whole CD what I was hearing was something special, and in retrospect, indeed it was.
As a matter of fact, just a couple of days ago I’d been looking for that very CD among my collection, but can’t find it. I fear I’ve loaned it out, which for me is tantamount to having given it away, because I seldom remember who I lend CDs to.
Aha! Found a picture of it, anyway:
