New whistles just arrived from Big Whistle! I got a Clare D, a Feadog C and a Gen Bb. The Clare needed just a little tweak and the Gen is great as is (so far!). But the Feadog needs a tweak…trouble is, I can’t remove the stinkin’ fipple. If I’m verrry careful, could I wrap a towel around it and use some vice grips? Warm water doesn’t seem to do anything to the glue. The Clare fipple just slipped right off, by the way.
Just thought I’d share this latest fit of WhOA. Any suggestions on the Feadog?
I nuked a cup of water for 2 minutes. It was just shy of boiling. Stuck the fipple in, bubbles came up, I yanked it out and thefipple popped right off. Try HOT water?!?
I had an old inner tube that I had cut in to strips like big rubber bands. I wrapped a piece around the mouthpiece and another piece below the mouthpiece for a non-slip hand grip. I attached vice grips to the mouthpiece from the side and twisted in opposite directions and it worked without damage.
BTW, there was very little glue on it. It was just a very tight fit. The hot water didn’t do diddly.
I’ve tried hot water about as hot as I think is safe and still no good. I have a pair of rubber cleaning gloves that I’ll try in the way you describe. I’m just a little concerned about cracking the fipple with the grips…
Feadogs dont have glue
although if there is any varinsh or paint on it, that may well offer resistance,
My advice is: more pull then twist,
less chance of cracking the head,
keep both the head warmer then room temp
dip the shaft up to the head in boiling water
build up those bicep muscles
dont let a lil whistle beat ya
