We started on alto recorder (it’s pretty awesome), got a soprano later (it’s not nearly as nice as the alto, probably in part because it’s a cheapie and the alto’s a Yamaha).
Well yesterday we got ourselves a tin whistle, too! It’s a Waltons brass high D, nominally $8 but Guitar Center threw up an annoyance popup with a $5 off coupon while we were struggling with the website, so we got it for $3, heh.
They had basically just two models available, this and the Little Black/LBW. I decided to go with the brass one.
We don’t have any other tin whistle experience to compare it to, but I’m super pleased with it so far! It has a beautiful sound, I like the sound a lot better than our soprano recorder. Very chiffy. I thought octave switching would be harder than it is, but it’s surprisingly easy to control. And of course the fingerings are easier than recorder (recorder gets a little wonky in the second octave) at the cost of being a bit more limited in key. For stuff that’s in-key, it’s a blast!
I really want a low D now. Wish they weren’t so expensive.
