new feadog whistle

I went to a local music shop (with mostly guitars) on the way home from work today. While I was there I asked the guy at the desk if he had any used guitar tuners I could have from any repairs he’s been doing (I started building simple cigar box guitars). He just gave me the ones he had for free so I felt obliged to buy something. He had 2 ‘d’ feadog whistles there so I grabbed one.

I’ve been playing ocarinas now for several months so it didn’t take me long to get 2 octaves + 2 notes on it via scales (higher really squeaks), and then I had to cheat and look at the fingering chart to properly get the higher and highest d’s going. I have to get used to that, it stops me from being able to smoothly play songs at this point.

Couple of initial comments:

  • i like the extended range. I had a couple of muti-chambered ocarinas that I got rid of, ocarinas IMHO are a poor expensive choice for extended range playing.
  • i have some old 6 hole bamboo flutes I never played much, they are both seriously flat in the high range (not a problem with the whistle).
  • i’m a little sad about what seems to be a lack of accidentals. Other than Cnat can I get accidentals?

Thanks!

Hi traeak,
from fullbodyburn:

Except for the Bb and the G#, it’s mostly half-holing, I’m afraid.

Thanks for that resource! The included guide’s fingering chart was definitely…subpar. Looks like the accidentals are definitely not trivial. Getting speed on a tin whistle will be a challenge then!
