Lest you think I’ve gone absolutely batty…I’ve actually set aside my older GHBs for a brand new set…that way I can start playing professionally and pay for a better set of Uilleanns!! My first love is still Irish music followed by Scottish.
By the way, this picture doesn’t do justice to the beauty of the plain turned blackwood!
I’ve had messages from several wanting to know more about my new set…
They are made by Duncan Soutar of St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.
They are plain turned (without all the beading and combing and dust collection devices) which means the blackwood has to be of better quality to start with.
They have a more mellow sound…sort of like a more mellow freight train.
Unlike any other set I know of, they have a lifetime warranty against cracking.
I also have a set of Hendersons and two sets of Lawries but none are in wonderful condition and I really haven’t felt like sinking money into them to fix them up.
I also currently play a set of Vignoles pipes and I really, really want to get rid of them and get maybe a full set of Gallaghers!
What’s your set-up, John? Synthetic or cane drone reeds? Synthetic, hide, or sheepskin bag? Blackwood or plastic chanter? Soutar reed in the chanter? Did you buy them direct from Soutar or from a dealer? Facts, man, we need facts!
And let me know if you ever consider unloading the Hendersons or Lawries For the GHB illiterate, those makes are like Colgan or Taylor UP’s.
