Did any of you take a run at the Lowland or Border pipes before you saw the light and need to unload a set for a good price? ![]()
try texasbagpiper, seth is making borders for a good price!he has a website, cannot find it right now,but he is hear on the chiff often.
I have a set of Lowland Pipes made by Hamish Moore, quite an excellent instrument. I would be willing to sell them since what little time I have left through the week is spent on the uilleann pipes.
My Highland pipes, Lowland pipes, piano, synthesizer, and guitars are all left collecting dust. Poor things.
You probably would not consider my asking price as good though. This would be a set to get if you are looking for the best.
wow, hamish pipes,i have fred morrisons pipes,i would love to compare, but i live in ny.what is your price,if you dont mind me asking.

Though I am getting some great sound out of my Franken-Pipes (Heriot & Allan drones, Garvie chanter, Jim Schaefer bellows and stock). Although the alto is chronically flat and is unsettling the phase lock of the bass and tenor but that is a reed issue.
Has Seth Hamon made a full set of border pipes yet? So far he only has a mouthblown with only one drone on his website.
Dan, did you get your Reelpipes from Iain?
Cheers,
Aaron
These are Hamishâs small pipes actually (or cauld wind pipes), bellows blown. Pictures on Hamishâs site. Mine have the engraved silver mounts. I got the full fancy set.

They came in a case I purchased from Hamish. My selling price would be $3,200. Yes, I know, not cheap.
Actually at the time I get them the pound was much stronger, so even though Hamishâs prices have gone up a little they cost less know. They cost me all told. about $3,400.
It was actually as I was waiting for them to be made that I decided to get into the uilleann pipes. I had played the highland pipes since 1985. I thought, if I am going into a bellows blown pipe why not take up the uilleann pipes too. I had grown up loving both instruments.

yes Aaron, ian hooked me up,i like the pipes alot, while getting use to them i tweeked with the chanter reed to bit to much, and killed it.i think the drones were taking abit too much air,and chanter wasnt playing up to pitch.now their seems to be a shortage of replacement reeds, and had to resort to cutting, and scraping down highland reeds.it is very tricky to get the chanter balanced, and also get the right playing pressure.i spend much more time with the uilleanns anyway, and with the big pipes ,as i play with a compitition pipe band. dont think seth is making full sets yet,but chanters look nice.
Baglady, were you looking to unload or pick up?
Douglas, would you mind to send me the measurements of your border pipe chanter reed? or, at least a pic? I´ll make my own as you can see the last post of âpicture of your pipesâ it´s my UP practice set
Check John Burkeâs site, there is some A and G borderpipes for sale now,
good place to make offer. ![]()
Though a picture is worth a thousand words, most border pipe reeds have similar dimensions to a GHB chanter reed only the cane is much thinner (should be somewhat translucent) and the staple is a little narrower.
Iâd send a pic of my Garvie reed but 1) the reed is on a trip to Jim McGillivrayâs shop to help him pick out a reed when he gets a new batch in from Nigel Richards and 2) the digital camera is on a vacation in LA-la Land with my girlfriend.
Douglas, is your reed made for the chanter (by Hamish, Fin or Graham Mulholland)?
Yes, my reed was made by Fin. Quite a nice job.
I miss getting my Highland pipe reeds from Jimmy McCall.
Hi Dan.
I think the key with these pipes is to ânotâ make any real adjustments to reeds. I find that a very subtle pinch or âwarmingâ of the chanter reed is all thatâs needed to get the strength and pitch right. Also, where I live, I have made a âreverseâ cannister for the winter which provides ambient moisture in the bag, and this has been great for tone and ease of playing in the cold [dry] months of winter.
A new reed has been sent out to you, so hopefully youâll be back on track there. I have found the reelpipes to take some initial adjustment for both strength of blowing and steadinessâbut the adjustments were mine! Once I got the hang of itâŚWOWâŚbeen having big fun.
Iain
I did acquire a set of Lowland pipes before âseeing the light.â I still play them, thoughâŚ
I have a set of Hamish Mooreâs smallpipes in A. Killer chanter reed by FinâŚNearly loud enough to give Border pipers a run for their moneyâŚ
The only way this set would ever be available would be to pry it from my cold, dead handsâŚSorry.
My fishing trips didnât get me anything so I have ordered a set of Fredâs pipes.
Thanks
good going baglady!!!hi ian, good to see you hear on the chiff,i received an email from fred about the reed, and him moving too central scotland.i trimed down a shepard reed that is playing well, until the new reed gets to ny.their is a break inn period to the reelpipes,i mean getting use to the feel, the bellows.ect..uncomfortable at first, doin ok now! do you have the new smallpipe, chanter, and drones?caint wait to see them.been busy with the pipeband, and some new mccallum band chanters.my main obsession is still the ,uilleanns, and reed making .congrats again baglady, and good piping, chanterdan out.
Hi Dan.
Been lurking for a whileâŚstill have the uilleann pipes on the back burner, and fire them up every so often, which is fun, but likely a disservice to them!
Glad the reed issue is worked out, and hope the new one is a cracker when it gets there.
Donât have the smallpipes setup, but did see a great-looking set this summer, and Fred tells me heâs very pleased with how they turned out.
regards,
Iain
Hi all, Would you mind to post the lowland chanter end diameter?
Thanks
Marcelo
Thanks so very much Doogie !!!
