FS Peter Hunter 4-key Concert D Chanter

Much as I hate to do it, I’ve decided to give up on playing the pipes for now. It was a great lark, but other musical endeavours are clamouring for my attention these days.

I’m selling my Hunter D chanter, which was made by Peter himself in the late '90s from a really nice piece of Sri Lankan ebony. I acquired it from a friend of mine for whom the chanter was made while he was staying with Peter to learn about pipemaking. My friend wanted a top piece of kit but had little money (sound familiar?), hence the humble appearance but high quality of what he received. In 2007 I sent it to Sam Lawrence for a makeover; having started life as a one-key chanter with a simple reed-cap, it returned with new English boxwood mounts, a matching wooden cap, and three more keys. Here is a clip of the chanter being played (not by me):

As for the reed, it’s the original, presumably made by Peter. No permanent modifications have been made to the reed, just the addition of some thread and putty below the original collar, performed by a very pipe-savvy friend of mine (thanks, John), to open things up a bit.

I’m willing to ship the chanter anywhere in the world. The price is $2200, which includes shipping plus insurance for the full value. Cheers,

Rob

In answer to a couple of queries I’ve received, this chanter is Peter’s wide-bore design. Cheers,

Rob

Still available.

Lads, it has been brought to my attention, by more than one person, that I might be misleading folks in my description. When I said ‘widebore,’ what I meant is that this chanter is made with the wider of the two bore profiles that Peter Hunter used, as opposed to his narrow bore design. That said, the best description of the bore of this chanter would be ‘standard,’ not wide. It’s not a paint-peeler, being just about the right volume to stand up to a full set, or for playing in a session where you’d like to be invited back. Cheers,

Rob

Chanter still available.

Rob,

Understood!

Once again, I’m afraid there are too many that think a “wide bore” means LOUD. It’s all about the reed folks. Put a open reed in a med. bore and it’ll be LOUD. a closed down reed in a wide bore chanter and it wouldn’t peel a potato, much less paint off a wall

..Cá bfhuil mo leaba…? ah… ansin!

zzzzzzzzzz

I second that. Peter Hunter´s “crackers” can be reeded very quietly as well.

Nicely done, lads! Chanter is now SOLD. Feel free to add pointed, insightful commentary to any other FS thread of mine you should run across!

All the best,

Rob
