FS: Jim Carroll concert chanter (SOLD)

For sale, a Jim Carroll concert pitch chanter in cocobolo, boxwood mounts, and brass. The chanter has mounts for all four keys but is keyless. I had spoken with Jim previously about putting on the keys. He was more than willing at the time to put the keys on, however I was never able financially to do it. I’m sure if you contacted him, he would have no problem doing it. Jim apprenticed under Davy Stephenson in England and therefor his work has a similar look.

I’ve had this chanter for a couple of years now and have loved having it. I’ve found this chanter to be easy to reed and to have great tone and tuning. It also is very comfortable to hold. I am the original owner. There is nothing at all damaged on the chanter with the exception of a small scratch above the “C” whole which is just cosmetic. The bore and wholes have not been altered.

(Here is my original post when I first received it including more pictures and at the end of the post three sound files of the chanter with Jim’s reed at the time http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=75064&start=0&hilit=jim+carroll).

The chanter comes with two reeds. The first is made from spruce wood by reed master Michael O’Donovan. It did not come with a bridal as Michael feels it hurts the tone of the spruce. The second reed is cane and is made by myself. The cane reed is easier blowing and (I think) has better tone than the spruce reed. But the spruce reed plays just fine and will play in just about every environments. This spruce reed plays especially best in dry situations where a cane reed would close up or go wonky. (Personally I have never heard in person or played a concert pitch wooden reed that sounded as good as cane. I think cane reeds have much better tone for chanter reeds even if they are not as stable). In the future, if something was to happen to the reeds, I’m sure Jim could and would make a new cane reed or I would be more than willing to make a cane reed for free.

The following sound files were made in the last couple days on a small digital voice recorder so the sound quality is not professional, however the tone and tuning (I think) can still be heard. I can make a video file for youtube if needed.
WARNING: the volume of these recording can be loud so have your volume down.

I’m asking $1100 US or best offer. Buyer to pay shipping. Will ship world-wide insured.

PM or email me.
thanks for looking

After I posted, I realized I forgot to say that the cane reed is about 9 months old and is well broken in. It has been played great in the dry Bakersfield summer climate (15-30%) and in wet Bakersfield winter climate (60-100%).

Thanks

The chanter is now up on the Uilleann Obsession website. http://www.uilleannobsession.com/classifieds.html#197

Also, I am reducing the price to $950 US and I will pay for shipping worldwide with insurance.

So I’ve made a third reed for this chanter out of cane. It’s the best one yet. The reed head was made 5 months ago and I put it on a Jim Carroll staple. Super stable. I played it the other night for an hour in my garage in 20% humidity and it never changed a bit. ALSO, I am lowering price to $850 US

Lower Price: $700 or best offer. I need to sell.

It’s been a while. The chanter is still for sale and playing great. Played it the other day on the newer cane reed and was still strong. I can make new sound files or videos for anyone interested.

However, am lowering $600

cheers

I’m surprised this has not sold. It sounds like a nice in-tune chanter.

So I made a newer video of the chanter for sale. I play all 3 reeds for a comparison. Haven’t been able to practice much lately, so playing is not great.

Thanks for checking it out.

I sent my O’Grady chanter to Joe about a year ago and he set it up with a new reed he made from his own cane. The reed sounds great and I will vouch for his work.

Finally got on Chiff, the chanter is now sold. Went to a good home

Thanks.
