Hoed posted about this awhile back, but I’m enjoying it so much, I wanted to repeat the information.
The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage free concert series has provided an archive of almost two thousand one hour concerts that can be listened to over the Internet.
If you access the Millennium Stage archive page through this link and then search for the artist you’re interested in, you’ll find Lunasa, Flook, Cherish the Ladies, etc. A search on “Irish” gets 51 concerts. In addition to those I just mentioned, I especially enjoyed The Wrigley Sisters (Scottish), Karan Casey and Roaring Mary, but I’m just beginning to explore the list.
Best wishes,
Jerry
P.S. As you explore the offerings, please post your favorites. There are so many to listen to, it’ll be great to get some tips on the really outstanding ones.
I have previously posted many of my favourites here. These include, but are certainly not limited to, Lunasa, Flook, Aly Bain and Ale Moller, Robin Bullock, and old time musicians Jake Krack and Bruce Molsky. There are also two post-Christmas concerts of Irish music featuring Zan McLeod and other musicians whose names I forget right now-accordion and box, at any rate. Both of these are on Dec 26-2001 and 2001. Maybe there’s one in 2000 too.
Steve
PS. I think Jake Krack may be called Jack Krack on that site but Jake is his real name.
that’s a good point Tyg. I moved recently and had to give up my cable modem. Went to AOL and they forced their crummy little AOLMedia player on me. Which runs in silly little fits and starys of about 15 second increments. Maybe the Real player would be better inspite of the copper wire trickle but in AOL’s desire to rule the world, I can’t evern override to that.
There seems to be some kind of dedicated player for these clips. Try closing RealPlayer, click on “Play this Performance” and let it do its own thing. There’s a box that shows up on the screen that looks different from RealPlayer, and that plays OK on my computer. If I open RealPlayer and try to play through that, it doesn’t work.
Best wishes,
Jerry
P.S. I don’t remember if there was a little download that was prompted the first time.
[edit] Looking again, it does play using RealPlayer, but if I have RealPlayer open, it doesn’t work, like I said. It only works if I just click on the “Play this performance” link and let it figure things out for itself.
Thanks for posting about the concerts again, Jerry. When I read about them the first time, I was at work and forgot about them by the time I went home.
Thanks to Steve as well for suggesting Lunasa. I’m enjoying them right now as I finish up this post. Wooohhhooooo!!! Listen to 'em go!!!
