Finding Tutorial Tunes Online

I’ve created a custom Google search engine for finding tutorial tunes online, e.g., when you want to learn “Geese in the Bog” and you need an MP3 of someone playing the tune to listen to and learn from. You can find the search engine at:

http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=000459911131320826227%3Apr71mpimhd0

You just type in the name of the tune and hit return. Currently I’m searching this list of sites:

http://irishwindow.com/wst_page7.html
http://tuneaweek.backstagerogers.com/
http://www.thewhistleshop.com/slow/session.htm

http://www.socalpipers.com/tunes.html

I’ve tried to select sites that would be most useful for finding a learning version of a tune. If anyone knows of other tutorial tune sources that I could include, please let me know. (Please, no comments on the quality of the playing at any of the sites, I think everyone understands that you take pot-luck on the web.)

I hope you’ll find this useful.

Scott, that is very very cool.

Way cool and useful to boot! Now if you can do one that does the samething for sheet music…

Thanks!

I thought all the Riley’s stuff had disappeared.

Comahaltas, grotton and many others are great resources.

Cheers!

Nate

It’s mostly still there, they just keep changing the organization around. Google isn’t actually indexing the previous years, due to the site structure Riley’s is using. I don’t know why they’re being obscure about it, but whatever!

nice about whistletutor is that in a dozen lessons you’re shown how to play ornamentes and tunes. Sean Cunningham plays in little movies fast and slow and explains how to play. REALLY USEFULL!

Thanks for this, this will be really helpful tracking down some more tunes to learn.

…one that does the samething for sheet music…

I’d second that!

I wasn’t sure this was serious, but:

Enter the name of the tune (e.g., “Geese in the Bog”) and you’ll get a list of possibilities. If you click on the “gif” or “pdf” links, you’ll eventually get to the sheet music. You can browse through the possibilities to look at different versions of the tune.

Personally, I like to get the text version (click “txt”) and paste that text into the ABC converter at concertina.net:

http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html

The PDF version there is about the best you’re going to get for sheet music from ABC.

Yes it was serious (I guess you can’t always tell by just looking at the writing). Thanks for the link. Looks like a good place to explore.

Thanks for that. Saves me a lot of time going through all those sites by hand. Excellent !
