Sheet Music

Maybe this has been covered before, but does anyone have any pointers to a good web site(s) where I can download some sheet music for Irish Traditional Music.

If there is already a topic on this please point me to it to save repitition.

Thanks
Gerry

The way – nay, the way – to obtain written music for trad tunes is ABC. There’s a whole bunch of ABC info at the bottom of Ceolas’s](http://www.ceolas.org/tunes/%22%3ECeolas%27s) tunes page. The general idea is that you have this text-only code, and you stick it in a program (I use BarFly</a](http://rbu01.ed-rbu.mrc.ac.uk/BarFlyStuff/BarFlyPage.html">BarFly</a)> on the Mac, and occasionally Concertina.net’s web-based ABC](http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html%22%3EABC) convertor) and out comes written music and sound.

While Ceolas has a bit of a list of them, I usually start at Henrik](http://home.swipnet.se/~w-11382/abc.htm%22%3EHenrik) Norbeck’s ABC archive to find the tne I want.

Here’s my favorite tune links

Preferred Link: JC's](http://ecf-guest.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/FindTune.html%3EJC%27s) ABC Tune Finder This is always the first place I look. It usually finds multiple versions of a tune. It provides both ABC, GIF(standard Notation) and Midi (sound) files. I can check the sound files to assure that I have the version I'm looking for.

Thanks so much - really appreciated

Gerry

Ye  ah, I agree. This should be a sticky topic.

Don’t forget thesession.org. That’s my one and only resource.

You can get the entire ‘O’Neill’s Music of Ireland’ and ‘O’Neill’s Dance Music of Ireland’ in pdf format here:

That oughta keep ya busy for awhile!

This is useful. I’ve been using Tinwhistler and the Session. ABC drives me nuts. I find conventional (5 lines and dots) much easier, more logical and really not that hard to learn. I don’t read that well (helps if I hear it a couple of times). Tinwhistler is good because there are sound files – always MIDI and sometimes a clip of a whislte playing it.

You may want to consider ABC2Win or ABC Navigator to read/print your ABCs as notes on the stave. ABC as used on the internet was meant to have a compact format to transfer big tunefiles easily, not really with the intention of reading the actual notation. ABCNavigator gives you a decent MIDI playback too.
