The Poststructural Whistle Board needs a FAQ (besides the general forum FAQ at the top of the page). Perhaps base it on Dazed In LA’s Chiffboard Matrix. Something that covers the basic question that we all have when we first come to the forum.
Beginner questions about keys, and whistles.
Questions about Star Trek TNG, Titanic, etc.
Terminology questions, such as what a fipple is (it’s the plug or block).
Just a list of questions that are common, and some links to pertinent threads.
A faq is a good idea but some of the stuff can be found on the main site. That’s where I found the blu-tack tweak. Should there be a faq or should the stuff be on the main site?
If it’s a sticky faq thread then it would be best to point to threads that answer the questions otherwise it will just turn into a huge jumble and the answers to questions will be buried.
One sticky point would be the famous question of “what kind of whistle”.
We have dozens of threads that generically answer that question plus threads viewing specific whistles.
I’ll see if I can dig up some of these threads. I’m not sure how to post the thread but I’ll give it a shot.
Here are a few whistle reviews from just the past two months. That’s not all and it looks like there will be some reviewing of reviews to get the most essential.
Many newbie questions are indeed addressed on the main site, and, hopefully the FAQ can direct them there.

This is a good point. My thought is that the first person who posts the thread can serve as a sort of editor and incorporate the contributions into the first post by editing.

Yeah… that probably wouldn’t be a question to tackle in the the FAQ.

Yeah, that’s kind of what I’m thinking, a series of links, pertaining to the common questions.
As I implied, a little bit of what Dazed did with the Matrix, but a bit more basic… a link to that site being incorporated into the FAQ, as well. This way, new people will be able to get their feet wet, right off the bat, and get an idea what’s already been said, regarding whether it’s a “freaking recorder” or if that “flute” was “just a prop” or if it’s possible to play the same tune with the same fingering on a different key of whistle.
One more thing. Please don’t post the question “What is the best martial art [for self-defense]?” (or similar) in rec.martial-arts. That question has become a chronic irritant in this group, and there is no simple answer to it; some would say it has no answer at all. There are reasonable procedures for how one should go about choosing an art/school here in the FAQ, and in another rec.martial-arts periodic post, the Newbie Guide. Read them first, then consult the group if you have more specific questions.
They have a seperate newbie faq for helping beginners choose a school and such based upon the various factors (price, style type, etc), and it might be a good idea to look into something similar for us.
