I’ve noticed that this forum has attracted a lot of new members recently, and all of us had many of the same questions when we first discover Uilleann Pipes and the C&F board.
So it occurred to me that we should create a list of frequent questions or frequently asked questions (FAQ)..the later being more redundant.
I exchanged an email with Dale about this, and his response was:
“Great idea. It could be posted as an ANNOUNCEMENT and would forever reside at or near the top of the index.

I am volunteering to compile and edit the questions and responses (as well as do any ongoing maintenance), but being a newbie myself will need some help with content.
So, I propose we approach this in the following manner:

I’ll compile the list of questions and begin a draft of the responses, and then post for comment.
Once this is in reasonably good shape, we can post as an announcement and then do any ongoing changes as necessary.

How are UPs different from Highland pipes?
How do I get started?
Where do I find a list of makers?
What are some recommendations for tutors/books?
I’m having problems with my reed, where can I go to get basic troubleshooting steps?
I would like to make my own reed, how do I get started?
I don’t see the point. I mean, the Uilleann pipe mailing list has done just fine without one for almost 10 years!

Snoogie, I had also suggested a FAQ for this board for the same reasons, but had thought of simply linking the many repeated responses from this board (usually something done by moderators). Creating a new FAQ from scratch would allow a briefer answer without all the discussion, excessive details and nitpicking. It will be a big job, but if you’re up for it that’s great!

DJM, I’d thought about the linkage idea as well, so we’ll see if it makes sense as the writing gets going…perhaps as “additional reading for the student.”
Roger you are correct, the key to this is going to be to make it as simple and straight forward as possible…not try to capture all of the main topics that have been discussed. That was done for the Whistle site in an index called the Whistle Matrix…a great effort, but NOT what this is intended to be. Additionally, it has to be done in an iterative approach. Start with the first 5-6 topics and then add one or two at a time..over a period of time.
The best bet will be to stick with answers/recommendations that EVERYONE agrees with (as if that is possible!) I saw an approach on an NSP web site where they listed “honest advice”…and then “modifications to advice” to handle some of the opposing points of view.
